Christy Tomlinson

I have been paper crafting and scrapbooking for over 10 years and still love it today! I had the great opportunity to work for Chatterbox as their Educational and Marketing Director for 3 years and then left to pursue other adventures in my life (including being a stay at home mom to my 6 kids and wife to hubby Ben. When I left Chatterbox, I started a new adventure working for Making Memories as a book and project designer, and also accepted a position as a Contributing Editor for Scrapbooks Etc, Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. In the Fall of 2007, with the encouragement of my husband, I decided to venture out on my own and start Scarlet Lime. Over the course of a year, Scarlet Lime grew much more than we expected and now that is what we both do full time. We love our job! In 2009, we also started a sister company called Scarlet Lime BeadArt! Our BeadArt website carries Jewelry supplies including fun unique beads and charms and DIY kits as well!

And why the name Scarlet Lime? Well to be honest, it’s simple. My favorite color is and always has been red, scarlet red, and lime flavored anything is my absolutely my favorite treat. The idea behind the kit club was to bring together all sort of patterns, textures, and styles; mix modern with vintage, funky with chic. So Scarlet and Lime, two things you normally wouldn’t put together,( but two things I love), just seemed to be the perfect fit!

I also love to blog and teach online! I tried to post daily inspiration on my personal blog and am currently teaching online e-course about Mixed media on my blog as well! Check it out as www.christytomlinson.typepad.com Well, I hope you enjoy our monthly kits, ad-ons, paper-crafting kits, and all the other fun things we have in store too! I would love to hear comments or suggestions you may have (good or bad.. I can take it, I have 6 kids remember?). So please feel free to e-mail me ANYTIME at [email protected]

Patty Young

Patty Young grew up in San Jose, Costa Rica, in an environment where she was encouraged to express her creativity freely. Both of her parents dabbled in the arts so it was only natural that she would inherit their creative genes. Over the next 12 years, Patty honed her graphic design skills at a number of marketing agencies before deciding to leave her corporate job in 2005 to stay home with her children and pursue her own creative endeavors. Patty is a licensed textile designer for Michael Miller Fabrics and recently released her seventh collection. Her fabrics include quilting cottons and knits. She is currently working on her eighth collection which will debut Spring 2012 along with her debut book, “Sewing Modkid Style”, published by Wiley. Patty Young at TCCE

Hello, folks! My name is Patty Young.

I am beyond thrilled to be teaching two of my most popular sewing projects at this year’s The Creative Connection Event in Minneapolis, September 15th – 17th, 2011! And I’d like to tell you all about them…

I’ll be teaching two classes (click on the name to be taken directly to the class page):

Sun & Surf Tote
At the start of this class I will hand you a kit that contains everything, and I mean, EVERYTHING, you need to complete this awesome tote… from the fabric, to the interfacing to all the notions, including buttons, grommets and even the thread! You will even get the original pattern, so you can take it home and make it again and again. You will walk away with a finished tote, just like the one pictured below, that is perfect for a trip to the beach, swim lessons or a day at the park. Hmmm…maybe it can even become your carry-on luggage for your return trip!

French Window Pillow Cover
Just like with my other class, you will receive a signature MODKID bag containing everything you need to complete this adorable pillow cover, including all the fabrics, the printed tutorial, the binding, thread and even a cute MODKID woven tag! All fabrics are from my Sanctuary line for Michael Miller Fabrics.

Last week, all the materials started arriving from all the wonderful companies I’m working with. Check out this awesome stack of fabric bolts courtesy of Michael Miller Fabrics…

And how about these adorable decorative buttons from Dill Buttons of America, Inc. There are enough buttons here for everyone to have 1 and then some (whatever we don’t use, I’ll give away at the end of the class).

Also, I received a box of goodies from my good friends at OLFA. There are circle cutters and rotary cutters galore. We’ll get to play with these in class and at the end of the class, I’ll draw names for a giveaway.

And last, but certainly not least, the wonderful folks at Prym-Dritz Consumer USA, just sent over a large box of sewing notions to give away at my classes. This is just the top layer of the large box! There are large snap-on grommets (the same ones we use in the Sun & Surf Tote), rotary cutters, rulers and self-healing mats.

I have so many donated items now that EVERY student will be able to walk away with a free goodie or two from our wonderful sponsors! YAY!

So, in case you missed it above click here to read more about the Sun & Surf Tote class and here for the French Window Pillow class. Register soon because these classes fill up fast and there’s limited enrollment!

Oh, I will also be participating in a roundtable pitch slam session – Pitch To Become A Designer for a Textile/Licensing Manufacturer. If you’ve ever wanted to become a licensed textile designer, here’s your chance to pitch your collection to a group of experts! I will be sharing the roundtable with Heather Bailey and Suzy Ultman. After pitching their ideas, participants will be able to spend some time with artists that have been through the whole licensing process. The experts in this category are Kathy Miller and Lilla Rogers. Learn more about this Pitch Slam session here.

Hope to see you all there this September! To celebrate my participation in THE CREATIVE CONNECTION EVENT, I would like to give away a sewing pattern bundle to a lucky reader. You will receive an assortment of 6 of our popular sewing patterns from each category. Please leave a comment below to enter.

A bundle of Patty Young's new fabric collection, Flora & Fauna, and an assortment of sewing patterns from Patty's company, MODKID!

In this awesome package, you'll receive 1/2 yard bundles of Patty's brand new collection, Flora & Fauna, which is just beginning to ship-you'll be one of the first to get it! The bundle will include 10 assorted designs from the collection for a grand total of 5 yards! Not only will you get the fabric, but Patty is throwing in an assortment of patterns from her company, MODKID! Patty and her amazing studio will be featured in an upcoming issue of Where Women Create. You won't want to miss it! In the mean time, here's a little about Patty Young:

I’m asked frequently how I design fabric. My initial thought is to say, “I don’t know. I just do it,” since my process is really organic in nature. But I think it starts with getting inspired. I get inspiration from the travels I’ve made to Europe and Central America, especially the beautiful architecture and art I’ve seen. My youth as a child growing up in Costa Rica inspires me as well and that Latin influence is evident in the bold color statements I like to make with my fabric. But I‘d say my biggest source inspiration, one that comes constantly and unexpectedly, is my children. A lot of my designs work well for kids and that comes from wanting to make pretty things for my children to wear and play with. As long as you have the inspiration that gives you something to say and the passion to create art that is suitable for use in the medium of textile, you have what you need to design fabric.

I can honestly say I really love what I do. I was born to create and as far back as I can remember I’ve always wanted to be an artist.  It’s a lot of work and it wears me out but I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. I always fear there isn’t enough time to get everything done I want to which definitely stresses me out at times. But it’s all worth it as I get a thrill from seeing the finished products and getting feedback from fans making their own creations from my fabric and patterns. But it’s more than that. I really thrive on the process of discovery and creating. Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote, “Life is a journey, not a destination” sums it up for me.

We'd like to thank Patty Young and MODKID designs both for being a part of Where Women Create and for such a generous donation! Please visit Patty at www.modkidboutique.com or her blog at www.modkidboutique.blogspot.com

* Leave a comment for a chance to win! Remember, if you have an additional entry, post twice, with the second post being the word "blog". Don't forget that all of the contests are open until the 16th (YES! The Sixteenth Day of Christmas!) at Midnight, so you can post anytime until then. Good Luck and remember to check back tomorrow for another great artist!
