Christy Tomlinson

I have been paper crafting and scrapbooking for over 10 years and still love it today! I had the great opportunity to work for Chatterbox as their Educational and Marketing Director for 3 years and then left to pursue other adventures in my life (including being a stay at home mom to my 6 kids and wife to hubby Ben. When I left Chatterbox, I started a new adventure working for Making Memories as a book and project designer, and also accepted a position as a Contributing Editor for Scrapbooks Etc, Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. In the Fall of 2007, with the encouragement of my husband, I decided to venture out on my own and start Scarlet Lime. Over the course of a year, Scarlet Lime grew much more than we expected and now that is what we both do full time. We love our job! In 2009, we also started a sister company called Scarlet Lime BeadArt! Our BeadArt website carries Jewelry supplies including fun unique beads and charms and DIY kits as well!

And why the name Scarlet Lime? Well to be honest, it’s simple. My favorite color is and always has been red, scarlet red, and lime flavored anything is my absolutely my favorite treat. The idea behind the kit club was to bring together all sort of patterns, textures, and styles; mix modern with vintage, funky with chic. So Scarlet and Lime, two things you normally wouldn’t put together,( but two things I love), just seemed to be the perfect fit!

I also love to blog and teach online! I tried to post daily inspiration on my personal blog and am currently teaching online e-course about Mixed media on my blog as well! Check it out as www.christytomlinson.typepad.com Well, I hope you enjoy our monthly kits, ad-ons, paper-crafting kits, and all the other fun things we have in store too! I would love to hear comments or suggestions you may have (good or bad.. I can take it, I have 6 kids remember?). So please feel free to e-mail me ANYTIME at [email protected]

Christy is giving away $50 to spend in her Scarlet Lime Shop, plus a spot in her

    Pam Corle says:

We’ve had so many over the years, some still around, some have since faded since my grandparents are both now gone but out most recent holiday tradition, well at least since The Polar Express came out on DVD is to gather at my moms house before Christmas (hopefully a snowy evening to add to the excitement) and watch the movie together. My mom makes a tray of cookies, my nephew always wants popcorn, we have such a wonderful time and when the hot chocolate scene comes up my nephew and I always get up and try and imitate, lots of laughter and joy that evening and I look forward to it every year.

    Kathy S. says:

My favorite holiday activity is driving around on Friday nights (our date night) and looking at Christmas lights with my husband and 4-year old son. Wow! What a wonderful prize pack. Thanks for the chance to win.

  3. 3
    Lisa Johnson says:

My favorite holiday activity is driving around to look at Christmas lights as a family while listening to Christmas music on the radio. The lights make me so happy, but the best part is spending time w/ my family. We come home and drink hot chocolate. LOVE it!

  4. 4
    Mary says:

My favorite holiday activity is baking cookies with my kids and it used to be when my older kids were little I liked to bring them sledding when I was much younger, but where we live there aren’t many hills that you can just sled down, so they like pulling each other around the yard.

  5. 5
    Melissa says:

My favorite thing to do is shop for presents – of course, this is much more fun when I’ve got some great gift ideas!

  6. 6
    Joyce Mitchell says:

My favorite activity is getting together with family. We’re a bit scattered around the country so it’s always wonderful when we can all be together. And it’s especially wonderful at Christmas. Thanks for the chance to win.

  7. 7
    Nancy says:

I love Christmas music, and one of my favorite Christmas activities is to work on a pretty quilt while listening to the music. Very peaceful.

  8. 8
    Brandi says:

What beautiful giveaways! My favorite Christmas activity is wrapping presents! I spread everything out on the living room floor, turn on my Christmas music and go to town! I love the creativity I can use in wrapping and the excitement I get about how everyone will like their gifts!

  9. 9
    Jeana says:

My favorite Christmas activity is spending time every Thanksgiving with my girls making new ornaments for our tree. I have a box for each girl to take with them – MANY MANY years from now :) – when they move away for a tree in their home.

    Tina McNamara says:

We live in Louisiana. On the levee along the Mississippi River there is a tradition of building bon fires. The bon fires help show Papa Noel the way on Christmas Eve to all the little boys and girls homes. The traditional bon fire was just a pyramid style. Over the years however some bonfires havebecome very elaborate. I’ve seen them made in all types of shapes such as log cabins, sleigh, LSU sign, etc. When my boyfriend(now husband) and I started going 30+ yrs. ago the bon fires were easy to drive up to and view. Now a days you have to park and walk quite a ways to see them but it is still a lot of fun especially if it is a cold night.

  11. 11
    red sandlln says:

At Christmas it is always making my gifts and cards for everyone. This year with my new part-time job it will be more rewarding as I watch a 97 year old dear woman. In many ways she reminds me of my grandmother who taught me so much in sewing, creating from what you have sharing what you have and southern cooking.

She can not see very well but I have been working with her in painting cards.
I feel there is always something people of any age can do…it is only called “challenged”. In this activity the true joy of giving each other laughter during the process is priceless.

She is also my official counter when I am making my own things. Hey everyone needs one.
    HAPPY HOLIDAYS Y’ALL!

  12. 12
    Natalie V2 says:

All these lovely, talented women… nice to discover new people to follow.
My favorite holiday activity… there are so many! But I do get a thrill when driving around town with my family, nibbling cookies, tracking down the best lit houses and singing along to Christmas carols! (I sort of cheated by throwing in several favorites into one!) Being all together and absorbing the sights, sounds, and flavors of the season makes me feel comforted and joyful.

  13. 13
    Maxine says:

My favorite thing to do during the holidays is to go to the family Christmas eve party. Each child is allowed to open just one gift. Sometimes you got a really good one… sometimes you got one that needed to go with another… sometimes you just got socks or underwear. As I got older I thought I knew how to pick the package to open… but my parents were always a step ahead of me and learnd how to wrap the surprises to keep me guessing.

  14. 14
    Patty says:

Our favorite holiday tradition is driving around town looking at lights. We take a van and have snacks. The kids love it too.

  15. 15
    April Derrick says:

Every year around this time I start making my orange dark chocolate truffles (which is an old family recipe that has been passed down). We make them for gifts and also so we have a nice big batch of them for ourselves all through out the month! I always look forward to making them because I try to only make them around Christmas…mainly because I can’t stop eating them if they are in the fridge! lol

  16. 16
    Lindsay says:

definitely making gingerbread houses! i didn’t do it a lot as a kid, so i’m catching up on my creations! and the odd sneaky m&m that goes straight in my mouth is a bonus… :)

  17. 17
    Marjorie Posada says:

My favorite holiday activity is reading the 25+ Christmas themed books we have to my children. We only bring them out for the holidays and they sit in a basket by the fireplace. My kids look forward to this every year. Each year supplement the Christmas library by purchasing new books and this year I’m going to inscribe the books with the date and year.

  18. 18
    Sherry says:

My favorite holiday activity is our Christmas Tree Party. All of my sisters and their families get together to go to a tree farm and cut trees. We then come to our house for a wonderful brunch, make ornaments around the table and have an ornament exchange. It is a great time to see all of the family in the area during the holiday season.

  19. 19
    Amanda S. says:

My favorite holiday activity is making Christmas cookies and candy to wrap up and share with others. We almost always decorate silly gingerbread people.

  20. 20
Rhonda aka Quilter in The Gap says:

My favorite holiday activity is napping when it is all done…no, just kidding. I really like Christmas parties. it allows me to see people I don’t get to see the rest of the year. A great time to relax and enjoy the holiday.

  21. 21
    Hueisei says:

It’s got to be decorating the Christmas tree :)
I’m able to decorated with my families and we are so happy with the result.
    Thx.

  24. 24
    Mary Freemon says:

My dear niece who is now 12, told me years ago that her favorite activity is when my daughter and I go to her house and we make and decorate sugar cookies…. this is so refreshing since most kids like getting all the gifts the most… it was always my daughters favorite activity so I am glad it is now a favorite family tradition

  25. 25
    Deborah Allen says:

My favorite Christmas memory and activity is going to see the local Christmas plays, programs around whereever I live. I am a military spouse, and often Christmas is spent away from my biological family, but always with a “new” family and many new traditions are added to mine.

  26. 26
    Theresa Lensmyer says:

I live in New Orleans area where there are a couple of beautiful parks. Every Christmas season, City Park celebrates the season with Celebration of the Oaks. The entire park is decorated with lights and figures from the huge Oak trees. Area schools decorate trees with special themes and these line the walkways. It became our family tradition every year to walk through (rather than drive) and spend the evening with local artists and musicians. After that we would go back to the house and start decorating. My children loved it and now , even though the children are grown, we still celebrate. It doesn’t seem like Christmas until the walk through the park!

  27. 27
    Karlene Boss says:

As a child we used to drive down Christmas Tree Lane where every house was wonderfully decorated. We oohed and awed as we watched all the twinkling lights and colorful displays. It’s still my favorite thing to do today.

Although I must admit sitting on Santa’s lap was pretty fun too.

  28. 28
    Patricia Meadows says:

So much fun!!! My favorite holiday activity is family, we all get together and it is so cozy and fun with everyone around. Oh and a new favorite is making gifts i have had so much fun this year making special gifts for friends and family. You all inspire me so much!!

  29. 29
    Denise says:

My favorite Christmas activity is picking a name off the Angel tree each year. It feels good to be able to give a child a Christmas that might not otherwise have one. We’ve been through hard times and had strangers pull through to provide our children a Christmas and every year its a wonderful remind of the goodness of mankind and we always use this activity to remember all we have been blessed with.

  30. 30
    Laurie Leblanc says:

Advent calendars are my favorite thing to give and to make for Christmas. This year I numbered small popcorn bags, filled them with treats and strung them on several suspended “clotheslines” in my nieces bedroom.

  31. 31
    Dana McNamee says:

There are so many! But one of my most favorites happens on Christmas Eve. Every year on this night we let our two boys open one present. In that package every year is a pair of pajamas. They pretend they have no idea what’s in the package. Ha After the gifts are opened we all put our p.j.s on, get in the car with hot chocolate and go look at Christmas lights. I asked me oldest son when he might get too old for that and he responded, “Probably never Mom”.

  32. 32
    Lady Dorothy says:

Probably “opening” my stocking. :-) It is just a small stocking and it is the same one my mother made me as a child. My husband always fills it with little stuff — not even stuff I care about that much. It’s just the fun of it all!

  33. 33
    Hannah Grace says:

I’ve always loved going Christmas shopping. It’s so much fun buying or making something that is just perfect for one of my family members or close friends! :)

  34. 34
    Carol B says:

I love the search for the perfect gift for each and every family member……. The joy of that one special moment when you realize that those who love you really know you! Love is the reason for this season!

  35. 35
    Lisa D says:

My favorite holiday activity is my annual shopping day out with my husband. He always takes off the second Friday of December and we spend the whole day together, shopping, eating and just enjoying the time together. We usually have the kids sleep over at grandma’s so we aren’t in any rush to get home in the evening. We do get a lot done but the highlight of the day is the fun we have together.

  36. 36
    Cathy Williams says:

My favorite holiday activity is taking pictures of my family when we have all gathered together……when all my kids and their significant others come home for Christmas and usually after all the presents have been opened and the breakfast is all cleaned up,….all the kids (ages 20-26) gather around the dining room table and start playing card games that make them all laugh so hard,…there’s nothing like the laughter of your children no matter how old they get…..that’s when the camera comes out and I’m shooting picture after picture. Memories are the best when you can see a picture of them.

  37. 37
    LindaSonia says:

My favorite Christmas activity is going caroling!!! I love to sing and love to harmonize and being with other people who share that love is fantastic!!

  38. 38
    Keena says:

My favorite activity is baking Christmas cookies!! They don’t last long around here but I love to do it!

  39. 39
    Kim Nobles says:

My favorite holiday activity has only been going on for the past five years. My son is in the Army and he only gets to come home during December. He is now 25, but we have always loved playing Super Mario World on Super Ninetendo, a really old game system, which I have managed to preserve! My son, his wife, and my other son all gather in the living room and stay up all night playing that game. We laugh, we play punch each other, we marvel at my son’s skill, but most of all we have a blast. The only time we have not been able to do this with my oldest son was the year he was in Iraq, but his wife and my youngest son carried on the new tradition in his honor, lol.

I know we had other traditions before he left for the Army, but I think they have fallen by the wayside in terms of importance and fun. My son and his wife will be home in a couple of weeks and that is the one thing they have mentioned wishing to do. It will be lovely, and we will enjoy it all the more knowing we won’t be able to do it next year because he will be deploying to Afghanistan a couple of months after the holidays.

    Thanks for letting me share!

  40. 40
    Lori Moon says:

My favorite holiday activity is spending time with my parents, brother and his daughter. I live in NYC – they live in WI. I love going home for Christmas. My Mom decorates her house with tons of decorations and it is so much fun to go home and discover something new. Our family gets together Christmas Eve for food, family fun and to make memories. Why? Obvious I miss them terribly every day so I cherish the times I do get to spend with them.

  41. 41
    Bev Lowe says:

Getting together with family and friends and making memories. My sister-in-law just passed away 11/30/11 from cancer at the age of 57. Even tho we didn’t live in the same state, we still got together as often as we could and made memories. I hold and cherish those times. I continue to make memories with my family and friends, because that is what keeps you together when everything is falling apart…

  42. 42
    Gwen Windham says:

My favorite holiday activity is any of the family gatherings that we have— usually at least 3 different ones, and sometimes more. Even though, most of my family live close and we have gatherings frequently (probably once every month or two), the Christmas gatherings are just special. We always have the most delicious meals, sing Christmas carols together, exchange gifts — including a round of “Dirty Santa” with $10 gifts that are frequently silly, fun type things, and watch DVD slide shows, which are sometimes just a recap in pictures of the previous year’s happenings, a stroll down memory lane with images from the past, or a trip to Fantasy Land where Grandpa has miraculously became SuperMan, Granny is now Marilyn Monroe, and the whole family is now the cast of Little House on the Prairie… even the family dogs get in on the act! FUN times! :-)

  43. 43
    Shannon C says:

Favorite holiday activity is tough because my daughter in only 2 and just starting to understand. I am hoping to make some memories and traditions as she gets older.
Wonderful artists and a great giveaway. Thanks for the chance to win.

    Lisa Nicklanovich says:

This question makes me realize all the holiday activities I hold dear…the feast of the seven fishes on Christmas Eve, our big family cookie making day, advent gifts, watching the Polar Express (even though my kids are teens) and pretty bad Lifetime Holiday movies. Oh, but my absolute favorite activity of the season is finding a way to spread the cheer…some years we’ve sponsored a family, some years we picked a wish off a giving tree, some years we invited someone to dinner who didn’t have family nearby. Last year we had some children over for cookie decorating so the parents could have a couple hours to themselves. Even in lean years, I’ve tried to count my blessings and remember what the holiday is really about, and hopefully teach my kids it really is better to give than receive (jury’s still out on that one!)

  45. 45
    Suzy Gray says:

My favorite holiday activity is baking (and indulging eating) all the yummy treats that have been a tradition in our family

  46. 46
    Cherie says:

My favorite holiday activity is our Christmas Eve celebration. All the excitement and anticipation of Christmas. It’s my favorite.

  47. 47
    Brenda Scott says:

My favorite activity is once the tree is all decorated, to sit that night with the fireplace going, and only the tree lights on….and just soak it all in! I get so excited for that first night of Christmas Magic – it transforms my LR, and kicks off the season for me!

  48. 48
    jennyy says:

I like picking out the Christmas tree because it is always our first activity of the season.

  49. 49
    MarciaW says:

My favorite holiday activity is when all the family, from my mother through great grand kids, visit for a family meal and present exchange. It is wonderful to see my mother’s face when all are here to be with her. Thanks for the giveaway.

      Holly H says:

My favorite memory is sitting on the sofa with my three siblings listening to our late father read
TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS. He managed a Sears store, so he always worked late on Christmas Eve, but once he was home & we were in our pajamas, the book magically appeared! My five children are the oldest of twelve grandchildren and each at least once had the magical story read to them by my father. My husband read story for all the other years. In 2010, we became grandparents — two grandsons, a mere six months apart! Imagine my surprise when one of my daughters insisted that I read this story to her son. It was an honor! And I look forward to knowing that my two son-in-laws and three sons will continue this family tradition started by their children’s great-grandfather.

    Diane Huneger says:

My favorite holiday tradition is a new one to me….It is getting a Christmas tree with my new grandson, Elijah and his parents….during these holidays when I wish for just ONE more day to have my kids little again…I realize I am being given that chance with my grandchildren and realize what a gift they are and what a gift this life is…many blessings to you all!!!!

  51. 51
    Karen Price says:

My favorite holiday activity is still watching our our children (now married) decorate our tree … this family tradition is so important and valued by them (and now their spouses) that we wait until my daughter and her family return home for Christmas (they live 1,000 miles away). My husband and I view this time honored family tradition a gift to ourselves as we watch our son and daughter unwrap each ornament and recall the fond memories of Christmases past , and so we don’t mind living with an undecorated tree for a week or two.

Renee Burke of Happily Ever After by Renee Burke, LLC says:

I love decorating with my husband. If I am not in the ‘spikit’ his enthusiasm pulls me in and it is magical! xoxo Thank you for this opportunity – I only know of Christy and adore her and can not wait to learn more about these other lovely artists! xo

    SewLindaAnn says:

My favorite Holiday activity is driving around looking at the lighted houses in the evening. Then it’s perfect timing for some hot chocolate and a Christmas show (of which we have over 50 of them recorded). It’s about the only time I don’t have to fight to get my teenager to join us!

  54. 54
    Bridget says:

My favorite holiday activity is driving at night with my daughter and looking at the lights. I loved this as a kid and my 4 year old love it too. It gets us all in the mood for the season.

  55. 55
    Michelle says:

I have to say trimming the tree is my very favorite, bringing out the collection year after year is always a wonderful surprise…but….the white elephant exchange with my extended family on Christmas Eve is wild and hilarious! I look forward to it every year now, and no one spends any money which is even better! Happy Holidays Jo! Thank you for the opportunity!

  56. 56
    Melinda Brein says:

Wow – very hard to narrow down to one activity! I love Christmas soooo …. ok, my favorite activity is waking up Christmas morning and watching my kids and hubby open their gifts – no one has brushed their teeth or hair yet we take pictures – we are all bleary eyed but totally immersed in our small little family’s moment of sharing! A very close second is the day to day excitement of the Advent calendars for my kids ;-)

  57. 57
    Mary Beth Hunt says:

Cooking….and eating. And driving around looking at lights. and then going out for dessert! :)

  58. 58
    Miriam Prantner says:

My favorite activity is doing the advent calendar with my daughter. It gets better every year as she understands the season more, and it’s a great time at the end of the day to slow down and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas

  59. 59
    Sharon K says:

During the holidays is usually when all of our grown kids are back together. We have hot chocolate while playing the games we used to play when they were all at home or putting together the Christmas jigsaw puzzles we’ve collected over the years!

And thank you so much for sharing all these talented women with us! It’s only day 4 and I have had so much fun reading about and browsing all of their websites and blogs. I have several online classes I now want to take and just ordered a few things!

Wow I have another fun thing to look forward to at Christmas time next year!

My favorite holiday activity is trying to make each Xmas for my partner Hayden better than the least. He had a terrible foster home so he has none of the awesome Xmas memories I have, but somehow still maintains his childlike love of the season. I try to give him a new Xmas memory or tradition each year. I love seeing his reactions.

Driving around and looking at Christmas lights. We all go get hot cocoa or cappuccino and spend hours driving around singing Christmas carols and laughing. It is “us” time without the distractions of tv, internet, or phone. We even take the dog – it’s fun for all of us.

My favorite holiday tradition is Christmas Breakfast with our children and now with the grandchildren also. We have a breakfast buffet with casseroles, breads, maple sausage and other yummy things. Afterwards we read the Christmas Story, sing a carol and open gifts. There are 21 of us now that the greatgrandparents are no longer with us. This has been practiced for over 40 years.

    Have a God Filled Day

    Judi Mooney says:

Christmas Eve… We are retired so as everyone else is working or out doing their last minute shopping I cook. I set out the food in chafing dishes around 5:30p and about 6p they all start wandering in. I usually do several hot italian dishes, an antipasto platter & garlic bread. For sweets I set out Christmas cookies, green pistachio cake & pink strawberry cake cut in bite size squares. Once everyone is here and has eaten we settle in and open our gifts. If it’s been a lucrative year, lol, we also play the white elephant gift game just for fun. We treasure this time with our children and all our grandchildren. This year we’ll be missing one very loved part of the family as one of our grandsons, his wife and their beautiful little daughter won’t make it home from San Diego (Navy). I am thrilled to host our family on Christmas Eve as our children’s families grow and each starts making their own family traditions… I hope to carry on this tradition for many years to come.

My favourite activity is taking the kids and driving to the big light displays in town. The best ones get listed in our local paper, and they have walk-through displays, hot chocolate, and choreographed music with the lights. The kids are always so well behaved because they’re so busy looking at everything, and it’s a great family night out! And we bring canned food or donation money because most of them collect for the local food bank.

A few years ago, we moved far away from family and friends. So, many of our holiday traditions were left behind. I have sweet memories of gathering with people I love, doing the same thing year after year, but now we’re creating new holiday traditions. One of my favorite new traditions is taking Christmas cookies and breads to people in our tiny little town. I visit the Post Office, the vet, the utility company, as well as our neighbors. It feels great.

  86. 86
    Jeannie says:

My favorite holiday activity is the day after Christmas. My Mom (80), my Aunt (79), SIL, and I go to the craft store and small shops in their small town. Then we come home and create. What we create doesn’t matter. It is sitting around the kitchen table laughing, eating Christmas cookies, and being together. The stress of the holidays is gone, we are together for a brief bit to just enjoy each other.

There are so many things, but I think my two equal favorites are these: I love to read all my different versions of “The Night Before Christmas” that I have collected – it’s my favorite! My favorite holiday activity is cookie baking. I always used to get right in there and help my mom with making all of the Christmas cookies.. and she called me her little cookie baker. I then got my kids involved in making all of the Christmas cookies and candies and expanded on our traditional selection and added a few extras. Our neighborhood treat is to make up a boxed selection of all of our traditional treats and share the wealth.. otherwise we would be eating WAAAAAAAAAY too many goodies all by ourselves. Especially now that most of my kids have grown up and moved out on their own :(

My favorite holiday activity is putting up the Christmas lights outside, both multi colored and clear, and don’t forget some that are blinking. Along with the outside lights I place a candle light in each window. Then I wait for it to snow…
For me, it brings back child hood memories to see the beautiful lights glowing all bright and twinkly against the snow. And just after it has snowed, there is that peacefulness and quiet – you can hear a pin drop, a twig crackle and everything just looks crisp and clean.

Our Christmas season begins with watching the original A Charlie Brown Christmas often followed by A Muppet Christmas Carol. Very often we fill in the lines as they are said. The past decade or so, I’ve lived far from my family, usually in small NYC apartments. So I’ve often not decorated because I was traveling to different places for the holiday. But one thing I love doing every year is choosing a kid from a “Letters to Santa” or “Angel Tree” program to make sure they have a good holiday. Decorating the tree. I have so many ornaments that mean a lot to me – like photos of the grand kids in little ornament frames. I make new ones each year for each of my three grand children.
I have other great ornaments that were gifts from loved ones or just different in some special way.
I enjoy watching my favorite Christmas movies while I decorate the tree each year.

    Coleen Reed says:

My favorite holiday activity is actually unpacking everything! Having a December birthday, I get Christmas related gifts for my birthday. Since I have had more than 60 birthdays, I have many memories packed away with the ornaments and decorations. Now days I cannot for the life of me remember why I walked upstairs but I can remember and see in my minds eye, the person who gave me every single ornament! That is the silly and sentimental reason I love to unpack! Thank you for the opportunity to win one of these giveaways.

It’s so hard to choose just one activity! My daughter’s birthday is December 7–we chose that as the day to take her to see Santa! She’s still little, but I think the excitement and wonder in her eyes is a thing to behold. I also love the Advent Lessons and Carols service at our church. Singing the beautiful music while listening to the lessons and seeing my husband out in the congregation (daughter still in the nursery) really brings the spirit of the season home. I also dearly love Christmas Eve Midnight Mass. The still, quiet singing of “Silent Night” while the church is lighted only by candles held by everyone brings tears to my eyes every time.

    Gudrun Odom says:

Mine is not so much an activity but a tradition i tried to keep going from Germany. On Dec.6 th we put out our clean polished shoes in front of the door, and if we were good St.Nicholas will put a candy or fruit in it,which means we will get a christmas present. If we find a piece of coal in it,there will be no presents.Even now with just my husband and i, i still continue and he always finds candy in his boot.

It has different names, but the game where everyone brings a wrapped present and puts it under the tree. Numbers are drawn and #1 picks a present, #2 can pick a new present or take what #1 got. We have so much fun fighting over the good ones or trying to get rid of the duds. I love my family and our laughter warms me from my heart ouywards!

My favorite holiday activity is Christmas Eve candlelight service at church. It’s the time when I can say, it’s done. All the holiday shopping, gift wrapping, baking, and running around has come to stop and now it’s time to enjoy my family, wind down, and feel the peacefulness of the season (if only for the evening). And if it’s snows, it’s like icing on a cake.

I remember one year my friend had broken her leg and had to have a half body cast on and was in a rolling bed (like a wheelchair) , but she still came over to make her candy train!

Making a mess is inevitable. Then the fun – decorating. Everyone pitches in. Of course, dividing the cookies up and taking them to neighbors, old folk’s homes, schools and the dr’s office.

My favorite holiday activity is baking and decorating Christmas cookies with my daughter. This is a tradition that I started with her when she was 2 years old and now she is 19. Last year I thought that since she was a freshman in college she would not want to bake the cookies, but she said, “Mom aren’t we going to bake Christmas cookies this year?” I was thrilled that she wanted to continue the tradtion. So I am looking forward to when she is home this year for Christmas break to bake our usual batches of cookies.

Now, with adult children and in-laws, etc., we can’t all fit on my parent’s bed! So we sit in the living room in our pajamas, taking turns and exclaiming over what everyone got. It’s so much fun, such a nice way to start the day. :)

My favorite holiday activity is easy – putting the star on the tree. Having a star on the tree is important to me because as a child I always drew stars on the top of Christmas trees. Not angels, not ribbons, not anything other than stars. It is undoubtedly the part of the holiday that brings me into my child-like mind and helps me capture a bit of what I think our children feel.

Favorite holiday was when my father was sick with cancer and he had a hard time eating. So to lighten things up we made gingerbread cookies and my sister and I were being silly and we added female boobs. When my dad came out and saw the finished cookies he laughed so hard he said he had to try one. He finished the whole cookie and a glass of milk. Two days laters he went into a coma and never recovered. So even though he passed away this is my favorite memory as we made Dad smile and laugh at a time which was stressful. It was a great day and a great memory!

We usually began the day with a yummy breakfast together on the road and then headed out with rhe dog to find that perfect tree. Everyone took turns with the saw. The tree stays up in our home until the 12 days of Christmas are over … epiphany.

There are many things I did as a kid that became my favorites – some of which don’t even live any more, except in my memories. One of those was looking at the Harzfeld’s animated windows every year on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. Harzfeld’s is long gone now, but I remember the delight of seeing the dolls and all the sparkling decorations in the window. I also loved going to the Cakebox Bakery’s gift shop, behind the bakery. A close second would be spending Christmas Eve with my in-laws. It’s a 3-hour trip each way, but my family enjoys spending that time in the car, just being together, and singing Christmas carols. We top off the evening on the way home with a trip through a local company who puts up a beautiful light display each year. I think the key thing is being with family. :-)

Favorite Holiday avtivity – getting the tree! Years ago when my husband and son were cutting down the tree in the rain – it fell over on me as I was trying to hold the umbrella over them to keep them dry! Some 30 yrs later – I have managed to stay warm and dry and have had “the most beautiful trees” every Christmas. And hot chocolate with whipped cream waiting for my hard working crew ;-)

All year long I find children’s toys & school supplies to make up Christmas shoe boxes full of gifts for Operation Christmas Child- a program run by non-profit organization Samaritan’s Purse. One decides the age group and sex of the child they’d like to make a shoebox for and then fills the box with fun and useful items for that child; balls, paper & pencils, dolls, toothpaste & toothbrush, hair ribbons, etc. The donor can include a photo and a card and their address if they wish- sometimes the children who receive the boxes write back. Samaritan’s purse collects the boxes and then ships them to needy children all over the world- Eastern Europe to Africa to South America. I love being part of blessing a needy child far away and reminding them what Christmas is all about!

My favorite holiday activity is hanging up my stocking.
You see, my Great Aunt Jan made a stocking for me and my brothers when we were born. the pattern of Santa and a chimney is the same, but the colors are different (one has a red toe, one a white toe..one has a red band around the top, one is green, etc.
They have our name and the year we were born knitted into them. Santa’s beard is made of rabbit fur (I think) and they are lined and they have been treasured for years (42 to 54 years, respectively).
When we were small, we could fit a foot into them, and even though I cannot wear it anymore, I always think back to those xmas hollidays in the 70s when I hang it up each year…

In the community where I grew up, there still is a veterans retirement home. we always called it (still do!) the Old soldiers home. They have a barber’s shop on the facilities and my Angel Momma would take us kids there to get our bowl haircuts. we all ended up looking the same! Anyway these old men always looked so sad to me during the holidays, and had no families to visit them, so we started a tradition to go and sing christmas carols to the veterans, and take the time to talk with them. As we sang their faces just lit up and I could tell even at a young age this was an important moment not only in their lives but my own as well. So my favorite christmas activity is singing to the veterans at the Old Soldier’s home.

They get to put their own ornaments on. They have such a good time. My tree always looks a bit “fuller” on one side (and closer to the bottom), but it’s so beautiful! It’s always fun to see the look on their faces when they realize what it is. One girl even cried, she said no one had ever done anything nice for her. Just my way of spreading a little happiness…

My favorite holiday activity in October is dressing up for Halloween!! I love to play dress-up, I have never outgrown it!

We used to always have a horse drawn sleigh ride, but we’ve moved and Papa sold the horse :( We like to watch “A Christmas Story” with Ralphie and Randy and always have some good laughs at how our life seemed to be so much like theirs. We just like talking about what happened in the year, other Christmases and remembering the Baby Jesus.

Favorite holiday activity was always Christmas Eve at my parent’s house. We would have a small gathering, go to a Christmas Eve service, come home and sing a few carols, drink some delicious cider and then my sister and I would open one gift a piece. Loved it! And of course waking up at the crack of dawn, running down the stairs and begging my parents to GET UP! Now I get to start all of these memories with my little ones!

I have lived in Kansas nearly all of my life and our Christmas celebrations are always centered around family and spending time together. Every year my 3 sisters’ and their families come and stay and we gather to play games, eat wonderful meals, visit and shop together. My most favorite time though is when mom will read a book to all of us. She is a great storyteller and none of us have ever tired of hearing a story. Last year she read a story called, “Trouble River” by Betsy Byars. What a great time we had snuggled up on the couch, scattered around the family room listening to mom read. I hope everyone has at least one special moment with their family that warms their heart. We have been blessed with so many moments and this is a tradition that makes me smile and I look forward to it every year. Thanks for the opportunity to share this and enter the drawing. I just love the Megan bag with the gorgeous blue fabric and the dragonflies down the side are wonderful. Thanks, Jan
