"Every Christmas my grandma would make nearly a dozen varieties of handmade candies from scratch. All kinds of fudge, divinity, pralines, and so on, but my favorite by far was her peanut butter fudge. She always made sure to make a lot of that because it was on the top of many of her grandchildren

The one I am most interested in today is the fabric giveaway as I love to quilt! Thank you for sharing so much generosity with us all.
oh man Heathers story hits home for sure.
I can remember every year my grandmother in the kitchen making cookies and candy for every family to get oversized plates full to bring home. Grandma is 95 and no longer able to do this but the memories are there…
Loving the random acts of kindness, sometimes all it takes is a kind word from a stranger to turn our lives around.
These are wonderful things to carry on or start new
Thanks for sharing

Just goes to show that traditions spring forth from the well within. Our past feeds our present.

Oh what lovely traditions. Heather’s probably hits home the most. My family is all about the candy and the candy-making. With us, the peanut butter fudge is also a favorite! In fact, this year my mom wants to get a couple of my girlfriends to come over and have a candy-making night so that we all have a little of this and that to take home or share with friends. It should be fun.
What nice traditions and now I want to make some candy for my children like Heather.
I’m loving all of these traditions I am reading about here. I will definitely be adopting a couple new traditions for our family :-) Have a wonderful holiday!
I’m enjoying reading these traditions so much!! Thanks for the chance to win!

The Brave Girls are awesome!!! I love that idea! All of these traditions are so fun. :)
Oh, I love the random acts of kindness and the story about helping the folks whose house burned down! This happened to me and I realize what a gift like that would mean. Wonderful.
Oh dear, Heather’s got me wanting divinity! I need to learn to make it how my local candy store makes it….so good!
I love the “word” gifts Melody and family gave out. That is such a cool idea!
And I’m like Monica! Come from a HUGE family (9 kids growing up) and live in wonderful Oregon!
Hugs to all these great ladies!
~Heidi
LOVE TO HEAR OF ALL THESE CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS!
WE’RE A MONTANA FAMILY CELEBRATING A ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS AROUND THE FIRE! THANKS FOR SHARING!
those random notes of kindness really touched my heart.
it makes me think of the tradition my husband started himself.
every Christmas morning we drag ourselves outta bed and hop in the car to go to whatever local Wafflehouse is around, for some breakfast. we order and sit there in anticipation of knowing that when we are done, my husband is going to leave a $100 tip to our waitress.
its sooo much FUN engaging our waitress in conversation during the meal~last year we had a pregnant young gal that was due anyday and took the Christmas day hours of work to get ahead on the cost of the season. she wasnt the best waitress, being a little “cold” to us in the beginning, but we took our time to draw her out and show her that someone cared for her~ God.
she was SO SHOCKED over her tip and everyone exclaimed over it for her. i cannot WAIT til we do it again this year!!! Merry Christmas!
So nice of these girls to share their lives with us. Thanks for introducing us.
What a great idea to pass out words of kindness to strangers. It is important to make someone feel special if even for a moment.
Thanks Melody for sharing your idea of passing out the “random notes of kindness”. Our family is looking for unusual ways to share ourselves this year. I pick this one! Thank you!
And, I have a quilting sister that would love the fat quarters!
I wanna win & shop too!!
i am *loving* all you girls are doing!! *thank you* for bringing {joy} to this prairie girl!!

What wonderful stories and gifts. I’d love to win Monica’s fabric.
Thanks for even more things to be excited about for Christmas. Monica’s fabrics look so HAPPY!
Reading other traditions is such fun. In my own family I’ve tried to create traditions and memories for my own children as well hoping they will carry those on to their own children. I’ve always been a huge baker and before my knees got so bad, every year as long as I can remember I made every kind of cookie each year I could possibly make and then too tons of candy too. I spent about $300 each year on ingredients and while that sounds like a lot it also made about 30 huge trays of gifts for family and many friends leaving a very large amount of each for hubby to take to work too.
I LOVE the idea of going to the mall and passing out those words/phrases the way they did. The holidays are always so stressful with so many putting huge pressures on themselves when really it should be about so much more than gifts. So many they gave those slips of paper to probably felt so good because it made them stop to think for a second. Great job girls.
And mixing different cultures is fun to do as well. You can combine the best from both and carry those on into your own family.
How fun to hear about different traditions around the world!
Oh what a wonderful giveaway, I love meeting the artists, its wonderful. Have a great weekend. Terri
I am also a follower, love your blog. Terri

Nice giveaways but I especially love Monica’s fabric. Thanks for the sweet post!
What wonderful traditions! Reminds me of some of my own, and ideas for what I might carry into a family of my own someday…
I love seeing my children create new traditions with the grands!
great holiday memories! I have many but I will share with yall my favorite with my son. My sonwas born dec 29th. rough time to be born, right after christmas. I started 2 traditions with him. I decorate the house the weekend of Tday. a tad early but it all comes down by dec27th. that way the 2 hoildays wont mix. 2nd tradition is we celebrate and still do, even though he will be 29 this year, is his 1/2 birthday in June. it made a huge difference for him when was growing up. he looked forward more to his 1/2 birthday than his reg birthday. (mauh) Liz
Oh that was such a fun post! Thank you to everyone for sharling!
How wonderful that these ladies are sharing their holiday joy with us! Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas!

I love Monica’s traditions. It sounds a lot like my family
Love the stories! Thanks for sharing.
Loved the video! Thanks for the opportunity to see it and read the other traditions. We are starting some new traditions this year, so wish us luck!
Three lovely and special traditions.
I too am German and my family celebrates at midnight much like Monica’s. I have very fond memories of the same thing (without the pinata!) My grandmother would bake all day Christmas eve and we would have a feast and games and music all night. Our family would come from hours away to celebrate with us! There were decorations everywhere, even ornaments Hung from the ceiling! We had so many families that the presents would literally be piled up 5 feet high across the whole living room with people sitting on stairs and scrunched into one room. It was lovely to be near everyone and eat wonderful foods like German games and tunips and turkey or sometimes even lasagna. What excitement and memories.. thank you for reminding me.
Its a lovely thing despite our differences that we can celebrate the holidays together.
I am absolutely in love with Happy Zombie! What fun!!
Olive & Ollie is a darling Etsy shop–Heather is very creative!
And of course, random words of kindness was such a thoughtful, loving thing to do (and share).
thank you,Jo, for the opportunity to meet all these artists.
We dont have a huge family, most of our Family is in the UK (we are in Australia) I have 6 relatives in Australia and they are a long way away from here, so not so much on traditions for us.. but I love spending the day with my kids and hubby and prefer to spend it in my PJ’s…
Wow, love the traditions!!!
Thank you for so many words of ideas, love and encouragement!
I just love reading about other’s holiday traditions. My kids are growing up so quickly and it seems like many of our traditions are fading away, but also new ones are being made.
Thanks so much to the artists for sharing!
I posted the button on our blog.
All 3 artists have heartwarming and great traditions. Not mention their generosity!
Button is on my sidebar!
Wow – I love all three artist’s works. Such creativity in all of them.
Growin up, we (my Mom and I) made dozens upon dozens of cookies at holiday time in our house, plus lefse, krumkake and holubtsi (cabbage rolls),then when I got older, I found wonderful recipes for sour cream fudge and peanut brittle! We spent countless hours in the kitchen, but the rewards sure were yummy!
I added your button to my blog linked back to this blog.
ooooh. please pick me. this is awesome… thanks!
What wonderful traditions and memories! Thanks for the new artists and a chance to win!
What wonderful traditions and memories! Thanks for the new artists and a chance to win!
What wonderful memories and traditions! Thank you for introducing these women to us!
Of all the above ideas, my favorite one was the giving of hot chocolate along with the messages. I have decided that I want to get my 14 year old daughter over the holidays and take a few of her friends and have them give messages out at the mall here in Al. What a wonderful idea. There are so many people out there just waiting for an incouraging word.
Thank you for all of the inspiration!!
Karen in Breezy Point

I love reading about the traditions, both old and new, of all these wonderful women. The prizes are great too but just a bonus when the real treat is the stories.
I tweeted about these great holiday traditions. . .
Lovely posts! Our traditions like Monica’s have changed over the years as family scatters and the kids start their own families not always as near as we like but the one thing that always happens, even with FB, texting, blogs and emails, I call my brothers and cousin Christmas Eve or Christmas day and remember our childhood celebrations growing up. I have to hear their voices. Gosh I wish we would have had a pinata though! Thanks for the give aways!
What a fabulous amazing giveaway. What wonderful traditions.
For some reason my comment didn’t update. Please enter me into your giveaway for these 3 wonderful artists. I’ve followed Happy Zombie for a while and love her fabrics. Thanks for this series of bios of artists that are due recognition. alternate email mlwright29 (at) hotmail (dot) com

More wonderful traditions! Another of our traditions was the Christmas day buffet that was out for the whole extended family dropping by our grandparent’s house – all the aunts and uncles and great aunts and great uncles and cousins. Sandwiches from the leftover ham and turkey, lots of Christmas cookies, fudge, chips – everyone snacked and talked and then went on their way to enjoy the Christmas day!

so blessed to have found your blogs… todays sponsors all have a special gift to share. I especially love Heathers Custom Appliqued Rocket Lounge Set for Little Boys with Pants and Appliqued Tee by Olive and Ollie. And was really touched by Melody’s gift of the chip-art set consisting of a Chip art Bluebird Alphabet and Chip Art Block, Mallet and spray bottle all in blue… I love the possibilities that owning this set could open up… I have not used it before, but the artist & creative side of me, would love to learn how to use it to bless many around me! I enjoyed reading the stories! I love Monica’s fabric too!
Love the quilts with your fabrics. Would love to win!!
My husband is half Mexican, so I can relate to Monica’s story about Mexican celebrations.
How fun it is to read everyone’s different traditions! Santa use to just bring us one gift one gift on Christmas morn (tough times for Santa!) and one year he brought me and my two brothers, each a tractor. It was big and heavy and wonder, ‘what the heck was Santa, thinkin’, bringin’ me a tractor????’
Great traditions! Monica, I can’t believe your family would stay up that late and then get all rowdy and whack a pinata! Wow! Loved the Random Words of Kindness Video. Thanks for sharing, girls!
Love it!
Love the giveaways!! Thanks!!
Monica always makes me feel better! And I loved the Brave Girls Club video. It made me cry. Thanks.
I love Melody’s idea and plan to download the list of messages. Instead of passing them out, I think I will roll them and tie them with ribbon and drop them around some local stores. Hopefully, the person that needs to receive one will be the one who picks it up.

I just love these 3. I have seen Monica’s quilting at the happy zombie & I love her colors & fabrics. she is so `happy’& has such an inspiration. Melody seems to have such kindness & the alphabet set is something I would so love to have.
Heather & her recipe & candy traditions has my heart for being able to save & carry forth such a special `moment’that will forever be special in the heart of her family & children.
what a wonderful way to bring in the Christmas season..
I LOVE THIS…
thanks for this taking time to share holiday memories.
I loved reading the stories and all of them touched me in different ways. The first story reminded me of when I was little and a family friend would make dozens of different Christmas cookies and my sisters and I would help her bake them and package them up and if there was any left which there was we could eat them. The second story hits home with me about how I am starting to teach my children about being kind to others and giving to those who would have nothing if we didn’t. We have been putting together shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child for the past two Christmas’s. My children are 4 and 5 this year and for them to get excited and pick out items to give is heart warming to me and my husband. And the last story reminds me of again being little and gathering at my grandparents home on Christmas Eve and we too would exchange gifts and we always had to wait until after the kitchen was cleaned which felt like it took forever. Then my grandfather would ask one of us to be the elf and pass out the gifts then one by one we got to open them and if there were clothes in there we had to model them. I would love to win Monica’s fabric I have been wanting it for awhile now and I have even looked for it in my local Quilt shop’s here in Georgia but can’t find it. Thank you ladies for sharing your stories.
These are great as well! LOVE the random acts of kindness!

With my kids and grandkids living out of state, our holiday is pretty quiet, but I enjoy decorating with my Wee Forest Folk mouse collection and Mary Engelbreit items. My husband’s family is Swedish, so we have gnomes around.
I loved reading about Monica’s Christmas with her big family. This, to me, is what Christmas is all about. Lots of family, lots of food, lots of fun. I would love to win her fabric giveaway. Thanks for the chance to win.
The video brought me to tears, it was very touching.
Tamales at Christmastime is a gift in itself. I love to know that people have family- and charity-based traditions. With all the frenzy, it’s so easy to forget the simplicity of the holiday.
So glad I just found your website. Reading about all the traditions is helping me to remember all of ours.
I’m especially looking forward to Christmas this year as my daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren will be visiting from Alaska. They are looking forward to Christmas in the US as they have been overseas for the last 7 years as my son-in-law is in the Air Force. I’ve made each of these grandchildren a quilt for Christmas so they can stay warm in Alaska.
great traditions, all! Thanks for the giveaway – I’d love the fabric!
I cut my finger this morning so I am having trouble posting. Enjoy reading the entries and all the comments.

I loved reading about your Christmas traditions, old and new. As former Southern Californians now living in Oregon, we, too, look forward to tamales on Christmas Eve…and I’ll never forget the sight of my childhood best friend’s Christmas tree alight with real candles, courtesy of her Berlin-born mother.

I love hearing other traditions. I’ve never eaten a tamale . . maybe, I’ve never even seen one, but I want to and I love her fabric . . . I’d love to win it as I am beginning to learn quilting and just purchased a 1963 sewing machine off of Craigslist and just got it going.
Grace and Peace,
Amy

Monica you made me laugh with the Germexican Christmas, 80+ people packed into a house we have more like 12 and that is it….still we are all together.
I love the message idea, seems better than a christmas cracker, and yummy home made sweets now I could really enjoy that. So many things that make the occasion, and I have never really thought about it….it’s never too late I guess, thank you ladies, very inspiring.

Monica ,
I loved your Christmas Tradition! My childhood experiences of Christmas were very similar to yours. We are trying to keep those wonderful memories going for our daughter by gathering ever Christmas with family and sharing a tamale or two. :). Abuelita is our head Tamale elf but we get in there to spread! Hope your tamales are yummy this year! Merry Christmas!
I love reading these fun traditions! I’ll be back!
I love hearing about other family holiday traditions.
I love reading about what traditions other families have. When my Grandparents died at a young age, so did all of our family traditions. So, now that I have a family of my own I am excited to have our own traditions that we can enjoy and pass down to my children.

One Christmas tradition we have begun is our family weekend. We go to Santa Barbara for a weekend of “family time” the weekend before Christmas. We join the Christmas Caroling at the Mission, we shop, we eat, we watch holiday movies, but being away from home means we only concentrate on each other….not the million things on our holiday “to do” lists!!!!
Great giveaways! Thanks for the opportunity!
Can’t wait to visit these new blogs.

I love the idea of handing out random notes of kindness – especially wonderful because she is involving her children in this activity. My Grandmother also made unbelievable amounts of holiday treats every Christmas and now my Mom continues the tradition. I’m not sure I’ll ever be organized or efficient enough to continue on for them, but I am learning all the recipes and will someday inherit the VERY well-seasoned Pizelle iron. I did, however, start the new holiday tradition of Pomegranate Martinis and am determined to finally teach my Mom how to use the ISI cream whipper I bought her years ago so she doesn’t spend so much time making whipped cream. Traditions are absolutely wonderful and necessary, but a little update never hurts on occasion.
OMG I need to find a money tree somewhere so I can go to Brave girls club, and purchase those awesome fabrics :)
Thank you so much,
Maggie

Thanks for the chance!! Beautiful!
It’s always fun to learn about others special traditions at the holidays. Two years ago we started having The 4 weeks of Christmas. We get together once a week in December and eat or go to a concert or movie or play a game of monopoly and at each meeting exchange a gift each. This was my idea to get to see more of my kids after they left me with an empty nest. Of course, the gift at each meeting, was the bait for the kids and we have had so much fun doing this. Thanks so much for the giveaway. ms.cheryl

Love the german/mexican traditions — as my children’s father is from Spain, we used to celebrate el Dia de los Reyes (the Epiphany) — here’s to a Happy Holiday
Wonderful stories! Love to read about everyone’s tradtions.
More fabulous women sharing…LOVE this holiday gift!!!
A favorite tradition of mine started after we moved to the house we live in now… At our old home we had a nice sized blue spruce in our front yard, and I had purchased ornaments for it. We used to decorate it every Christmas. The house we live in now, has lots of pretty trees in the landscape, but no evergreens. So we decided we would decorate the magnolia tree on the street side of our yard… It looks a little “Charlie Brown-ish”, without it’s leaves and with ornaments and lights hanging from it’s bare branches, but that also gives it a certain charm.
Added your button to my blog!
Melody, what a fantastic way to bring people back to what Christmas is all about! Love it!
