oh man Heathers story hits home for sure.
I can remember every year my grandmother in the kitchen making cookies and candy for every family to get oversized plates full to bring home. Grandma is 95 and no longer able to do this but the memories are there…
Loving the random acts of kindness, sometimes all it takes is a kind word from a stranger to turn our lives around.
These are wonderful things to carry on or start new

  64. 64
    Michele Colaner says:

those random notes of kindness really touched my heart.
it makes me think of the tradition my husband started himself.
every Christmas morning we drag ourselves outta bed and hop in the car to go to whatever local Wafflehouse is around, for some breakfast. we order and sit there in anticipation of knowing that when we are done, my husband is going to leave a $100 tip to our waitress.
its sooo much FUN engaging our waitress in conversation during the meal~last year we had a pregnant young gal that was due anyday and took the Christmas day hours of work to get ahead on the cost of the season. she wasnt the best waitress, being a little “cold” to us in the beginning, but we took our time to draw her out and show her that someone cared for her~ God.
she was SO SHOCKED over her tip and everyone exclaimed over it for her. i cannot WAIT til we do it again this year!!! Merry Christmas!

  74. 74
    VickiT says:

Reading other traditions is such fun. In my own family I’ve tried to create traditions and memories for my own children as well hoping they will carry those on to their own children. I’ve always been a huge baker and before my knees got so bad, every year as long as I can remember I made every kind of cookie each year I could possibly make and then too tons of candy too. I spent about $300 each year on ingredients and while that sounds like a lot it also made about 30 huge trays of gifts for family and many friends leaving a very large amount of each for hubby to take to work too.
I LOVE the idea of going to the mall and passing out those words/phrases the way they did. The holidays are always so stressful with so many putting huge pressures on themselves when really it should be about so much more than gifts. So many they gave those slips of paper to probably felt so good because it made them stop to think for a second. Great job girls.
And mixing different cultures is fun to do as well. You can combine the best from both and carry those on into your own family.

I too am German and my family celebrates at midnight much like Monica’s. I have very fond memories of the same thing (without the pinata!) My grandmother would bake all day Christmas eve and we would have a feast and games and music all night. Our family would come from hours away to celebrate with us! There were decorations everywhere, even ornaments Hung from the ceiling! We had so many families that the presents would literally be piled up 5 feet high across the whole living room with people sitting on stairs and scrunched into one room. It was lovely to be near everyone and eat wonderful foods like German games and tunips and turkey or sometimes even lasagna. What excitement and memories.. thank you for reminding me.

    Shyla says:

I loved reading the stories and all of them touched me in different ways. The first story reminded me of when I was little and a family friend would make dozens of different Christmas cookies and my sisters and I would help her bake them and package them up and if there was any left which there was we could eat them. The second story hits home with me about how I am starting to teach my children about being kind to others and giving to those who would have nothing if we didn’t. We have been putting together shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child for the past two Christmas’s. My children are 4 and 5 this year and for them to get excited and pick out items to give is heart warming to me and my husband. And the last story reminds me of again being little and gathering at my grandparents home on Christmas Eve and we too would exchange gifts and we always had to wait until after the kitchen was cleaned which felt like it took forever. Then my grandfather would ask one of us to be the elf and pass out the gifts then one by one we got to open them and if there were clothes in there we had to model them. I would love to win Monica’s fabric I have been wanting it for awhile now and I have even looked for it in my local Quilt shop’s here in Georgia but can’t find it. Thank you ladies for sharing your stories.

I love the idea of handing out random notes of kindness – especially wonderful because she is involving her children in this activity. My Grandmother also made unbelievable amounts of holiday treats every Christmas and now my Mom continues the tradition. I’m not sure I’ll ever be organized or efficient enough to continue on for them, but I am learning all the recipes and will someday inherit the VERY well-seasoned Pizelle iron. I did, however, start the new holiday tradition of Pomegranate Martinis and am determined to finally teach my Mom how to use the ISI cream whipper I bought her years ago so she doesn’t spend so much time making whipped cream. Traditions are absolutely wonderful and necessary, but a little update never hurts on occasion.

It’s always fun to learn about others special traditions at the holidays. Two years ago we started having The 4 weeks of Christmas. We get together once a week in December and eat or go to a concert or movie or play a game of monopoly and at each meeting exchange a gift each. This was my idea to get to see more of my kids after they left me with an empty nest. Of course, the gift at each meeting, was the bait for the kids and we have had so much fun doing this. Thanks so much for the giveaway. ms.cheryl

A favorite tradition of mine started after we moved to the house we live in now… At our old home we had a nice sized blue spruce in our front yard, and I had purchased ornaments for it. We used to decorate it every Christmas. The house we live in now, has lots of pretty trees in the landscape, but no evergreens. So we decided we would decorate the magnolia tree on the street side of our yard… It looks a little “Charlie Brown-ish”, without it’s leaves and with ornaments and lights hanging from it’s bare branches, but that also gives it a certain charm.
