Photography is a part of my history. Long before I was ever around, my parents were professional photographers; they worked at photo studios at various JCPenney stores in Utah. So you could say my original love of photography came from osmosis more than anything; I was around it so much I couldn’t help it.

Though I was around photography from a young age, I didn’t catch the real bug for myself until high school. I had a 35 mm camera and took pictures of my friends all the time. Back then we were working only in film, so it was more unusual to take so many pictures. It still wasn’t anything I was planning on doing professionally though.

My career choice was to go into business and climb the corporate ladder, so I began college at Weber State University as a business management major. But I took one elective photography class, and was hooked. I had always liked taking pictures, but the second I was able to actually process the film and do the printing myself, I knew I could never go back. The dark room fascinated me; I loved being able to see the end result of my hard work. I had a photography professor who took an interest in me; he said I had a talent for photography and should pursue it.

Where Women Create Sneak Peek: Salli Swindell

This week’s sneak peak into Where Women Create Magazine is a masterpiece.  It is hard to capture the amazing artwork that Salli Swindell of They Draw & Cook collects within the pages of a magazine but, I think we did a great job.

Salli Swindell and her brother Nate Padavick are studio partners under the umbrella of Studio SSS. Salli lives in Hudson, Ohio, and Nate lives in North Adams, Massachusetts (for now, anyway; he likes to move around). They are the founders of They Draw & Cook and They Draw & Travel, the largest online collection of illustrated recipes and maps. Although they live states apart, they keep their business running through bouts of over-caffeinated video chats, phone calls, family vacations, and e-mails. They describe their sites as one big international party, with new friends and adventures showing up every day!

Where Women Create Sneak Peek: Gogo Borgerding

Sneaking a peek inside Where Women Create Magazine is like being transported to a new and beautiful place.  This week we are pleased to share with you the sparkling place that Gogo Borgerding creates GOGO Jewelry.

Gogo Borgerding
GOGO Jewelry

A love of painting and other artistic endeavors has led New Orleans jewelry designer Gogo Borgerding down a wonderful path that she says makes her happy and content. Her foray into jewelry making began with Shrinky Dink and has evolved into a successful business. Nowadays she layers colored anodized aluminum sheets underneath a sterling silver top layer. She cuts her design out of the silver, then the individual layers are stacked together, drilled, and attached with handmade silver rivets. Gogo’s dazzling color and striking designs result in showstopping jewelry that always gets attention.
