Angie Dudley AKA Bakerella is a Georgia native who enjoys creating fun sweets for family and friends. After taking a cake decorating class in 2007, she started the baking blog, Bakerella, to explore new ideas and satisfy her sweet tooth. Her creative approach with sweets and colorful photographs have inspired many others to do the same. In April, 2008, Angie appeared on The Martha Stewart Show, where she demonstrated how to make Cupcake Pops. Her book,

Cake Pops By Bakerella: Tips, Tricks, And Recipes For More Than 40 Irresistible Mini Treats

was released in September of 2010.

The response to these cute little cakes on a stick was incredible. So, don’t be surprised if you see these pop up at a party near you.

 Gooseberry Patch

Back in 1984, we were next-door neighbors raising our families in the little town of Delaware, Ohio. Two moms with small children, we were looking for a way to do what we loved and stay home with the kids too. We had always shared a love of home cooking and making memories with family & friends and so, after many a conversation over the backyard fence, Gooseberry Patch was born. We put together our first catalog at our kitchen tables, enlisting the help of our loved ones wherever we could. From that very first mailing, we found an immediate connection with many of our customers and it wasn’t long before we began receiving letters, photos and recipes from these new friends. In 1992, we put together our very first cookbook, compiled from hundreds of these recipes and, the rest, as they say, is history. Hard to believe it’s been over 25 years since those kitchen-table days! From that original little Gooseberry Patch family, we’ve grown to include an amazing group of creative folks who love cooking, decorating and creating as much as we do. Today, we’re best known for our homestyle, family-friendly cookbooks, now recognized as national bestsellers. One thing’s for sure, we couldn’t have done it without our friends all across the country. Each year, we’re honored to turn thousands of your recipes into our collectible cookbooks. Our hope is that each book captures the stories and heart of all of you who have shared with us. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or are just discovering us, welcome to the Gooseberry Patch family!

Our friends at Gooseberry Patch are giving away one of their favorite holiday cookbooks,

Heather Jones~Olive & Ollie

Heather Jones is a designer, seamstress, and modern quilter. She lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with her husband, Jeff, and two young children, Aidan and Olivia, who are her biggest supporters as well as her greatest sources of inspiration. Heather is the founder and current president of the Cincinnati Modern Quilt Guild and is working on her first line of appliqué, sewing, and quilting patterns. She is often inspired by everyday places and things that many people wouldn’t even notice, and is always excited by the challenge to translate that inspiration into her work. Three of her original quilts were chosen as winners of the Modern Quilt Guild’s Project Modern Challenges, a year-long national quilting competition. Heather has great respect for the art of quilt making and loves to bring a modern twist to traditional patterns.

Heather is also the owner of Olive & Ollie, a small, handmade business that specializes in clothing and accessories for infants and children. Heather creates fresh and modern designs and she sells her handmade work in her etsy shop, www.oliveandollie.etsy.com, and at select retail locations throughout the US.

Olive & Ollie is named after two women in Heather’s family, her great-grandmother Olive, and her great-great-aunt Ollie. Both were strong, independent women who made all sorts of things by hand, and shared Heather’s belief that handmade is best. In fact, she still has her baby quilt aunt Ollie made over 35 years ago, when she was in her 80s.

For more information on Heather and her work, please visit her blog at www.oliveandollie.com.

Lisa Leonard

I have been making jewelry since high school but i decided to get serious after my first son, david, was born. i wanted to start a small business that would enable me to quit my job and stay home with my boys. at the time, I had never taken any formal classes or received special training in jewelry making. I just went for it! I am kind of the “jump in and learn as you go” type. creating jewelry not only allowed me to work from home, but has connected me with so many amazing women along the way.

my desire is to create simple, lovely pieces that can be worn with jeans or your little black dress. i want each piece to be meaningful. our custom jewelry is hand-stamped with your kids’ names or a special phrase or verse. I love to touch my necklace throughout the day and reflect on my husband and my sweet boys.

each piece we create is a work of art—hand cut; hammered, polished, drilled and assembled with care. I am inspired by other artists—painters, scrapbookers, clothing designers and poets. I also love to soak up nature-the sky, the sea, the green hills. I let all these ideas and images swirl around in my mind and then I create. when an idea hits me I sketch it out and play until the perfect design comes together.

lisa leonard designs exists because moms, grandmas and friends have shared our designs with each other while waiting in line at the grocery store or sipping coffee with a friend. most of our customers find us through word of mouth. we know that you’ll find the perfect piece.

come visit my blog to hear more of our story and please share your story with us!

  6. 6
    Kimberly says:

It wouldn’t be Christmas if we didn’t have extra spicy Chex mix in the house. We make two batches “regular spicy” and “blue blazes hot” (my sister and I insist on the latter).

I have to admit my latest addiction is white chocolate covered pretzels with green sprinkles. So festive and yummy!

  8. 8
    Nancy says:

This comes close to my favorite part of Christmas day – making and eating sticky buns. In my family we call them “Philadelphia Sticky Buns,” because the recipe appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer probably in the late 1960′s. My mother made them every year, and they became part of our family Christmas traditions. Now my two brothers and I make them every year AND my niece and her family are continuing the tradition. These are absolutely, hands-down the best sticky buns ever, and Christmas would not be complete for my family (and a few friends) without them.

  9. 9
    Lisa Nicklanovich says:

My favorite holiday food is our Feast of the Seven Fishes dinner on Christmas Eve. Loving seafood as much as I do, it’s my favorite meal of the year!

This is going to sound stupid, but my favorite holiday food would be the bacon, egg, and cheese on an english muffin/bagel we make as a family on Christmas morning. So simple and every day, but they taste so much better on Christmas with the whole family around!

Delicious food is such a part of our holiday celebrations! When we have our family gathering at my Mom and Dad’s, there are always SO many wonderful dishes that we cover all the kitchen counter and serve buffet style– then we all make 2 or 3 “take out” plates to take home for enjoying later…. YUM! I always look forward to my Mom’s home cooking, but there is one dish in particular that I LOVE so much– always have and always will… and that is Mom’s dressing. My sisters and I have tried repeatedly to replicate her dressing, but we have never been able to get the seasoning just right– it just doesn’t taste the same… I think it’s because no one can cook like “Mom” cooks– she seasons all her meals with tons of love … :-)

I thought this question would be a cinch–turns out it’s harder than I thought!

After much deliberation, I’ve decided my favorite holiday food has to be gingerbread cookies. I love the spicy and comforting aroma they create and fill the house with. My favorite holiday memory growing up was making spice (gingerbread) cookies with my mom and sisters. My mom would roll out the dough and my sisters and I would cut out the cookies, fighting over who got to use the coveted “angel” cookie cutter. The kitchen table at my home is still wobbly from years of us leaning on it to roll out the dough and create the imprints in our cookies!

Chex party mix. My Grandmother and I would make dishpans full of it to give to our family. Since the 70′s we made it together. She died last year and I miss her terribly. The funny thing is that she always called it Trash. I am guessing it was called that in the 60′s in a magazine article. We only got it once a year so it was and still is really special to me. That bag stuff doesn’t touch what I made with my Grandmother.

  186. 186
    Becky in Georgia says:

Wow! Just one food :) My favorite and it almost sends me into a sugar coma is Pralines. My SIL makes them every year. Just love the sugar and pecans. Thanks so much for highlighting these creative women! It’s been so interesting reading their stories.

  187. 187
    Rachel Harter says:

My favorite holiday food is sweet potato casserole. My mom passed down her recipe for this amazing dish to me, and it includes a streusel topping made of pecans, butterscotch chips, and brown sugar. I just got married in June, and as a new bride, cooking for my husband is one of my favorite things to do. I prepared my mom’s sweet potato casserole on my own for the first time this Thanksgiving. We had a crowd of guests for the holiday, which required a huge portion of the casserole. Although the thought of hosting guests at my home for the first time, my husband and I turned the cooking into a fun project, and together we baked and mashed 15 sweet potatoes. The dish was a huge success. I am so thankful to The Lord for my many blessings, and sweet potato casserole means family to me. That’s what the holidays are really about – family, hope, and embracing the love and mercy of The Lord, the Giver of all good things.

  188. 188
    Lisa D says:

I am in love with ribbon candy…does that count as food?? Once I crack open that first box and peel back the bubble wrap from the top layer, I know the holiday season can begin! :) My Grandmother started my love of ribbon candy…she always had a box she would bring to share and it was such a treat!

I have to tell you…I am loving these fun daily prompts. So much that I have started asking my 3 kids and my husband the question each day. I am taking all of our answers an compiling them into a little mini album of the 12 Days of Christmas 2011. It is such a simple idea but to have the prompt given to me each day takes out any stress of “thinking” and we are all having fun listening to each others answers. I am sure this little album will become a keepsake and possibly a new tradition! thank you!!

That’s why I am always looking for NEW recipes from all these great sites! My husband is very supportive of me TRYING A NEW RECIPE, which helps! :) One Favorite side that I have to do (One of my son’s favorite for holidays) is a
Spinach Casserole. Another one is Onion Wraps. the green onion cleaned and the tip cut off and then you take a piece of beef lunchmeat and spread any flavor of creme cheese on it and then wrap it around the tip of the onion. Great starters!

My favorite holiday food is snowballs…we take vanilla ice cream shaped into a ball, roll them in shredded coconut, decorate the top with green leaves in icing and red cinnamon candies (to look like holly) then we put a red (birthday) candle in the middle of the icing. On Christmas Eve everyone there lights the candle on their snowball and starts eating. The person who keeps their candle burning the longest time while eating wins a dollar bill that Grandma always puts in the middle of the table.

  193. 193

My favorite food for the Christmas is….the one that gets fixed every year. I love that tradition. You always have that meal to look forward to. Christmas Eve is usally spent with my family and we do slow cooked beef sandwiches with horseradish sauce and my dad will cook home cooked green beans with bacon, baked potatoes with all the goodies on top, and I usually will make a beautiful chop chop green salad. We spend the evening opening presents, eating a good meal and spending time with the ones we love the most in the world.

    Wynne Doyle says:

My favorite holiday food is a breakfast casserole that I have made each year since my kids were born (now 25 & 23)….they hate it…and refuse to eat it….but we laugh about it and when I make it sometimes during the year…it reminds me of such great times I have had with my kids during the holidays….it is amazing such a simple recipe means so much to me. Last year my daughter was stationed in Okinawa and we “skyped” while I fixed it just so we could laugh about her finally having an excuse not to eat it!!

  201. 201
    Sherry Pate says:

My favorite Holiday Food is something we call “pink salad” (although you can make other “colors”). It is a concoction of cottage cheese, thawed frozen whipped topping, pineapple chunks, mandarin oranges, and dry (full sugar) Jell-o. When I was in High School we lived in Florida. Since it was so warm, my mom decided a cold Christmas dinner was in order. Canned ham, potato salad, rolls, and the above salad made pink by using strawberry or cherry Jell-o. It became a yearly tradition until I moved away, but the “pink salad” went with me. It is a staple on our Holiday table, every holiday. Colored appropriately for the Holiday. Hoping the country ham and red eye gravy will be our comfort food.

my Grandmother’s Christmas cookie recipe…..such a labor of love I discovered as I got older and continued this tradition with my kids……rolling out the dough, cutting out the fun shapes and decorating them. My daughter is 22 and lives away now, but comes home for Christmas in time to make them every year and all of her friends come. They all must wear a vintage apron from my collection and they out do themselves with fancy icing colors and crazy decorations….singing Christmas carols and the house is filled with laughter….just writing about it makes me smile…..they will be here in a few weeks….time to get the cookie cutter out!

OMG – LOVE Heather Jones!! Truly – ALL of the artists you are featuring during the Holiday Giveaways are extraordinary! My favorite holiday food is the Peanut Roll. I admit – I don’t usually eat more than one – and they are probably more nostalgic than over-the-moon delicious. However, I have great memories of being with my Grandma as we hand-ground peanuts with her old steal grinder, baked white cake from scratch and had a messy good time rolling the frosted squares of cake in the ground peanuts. OK – maybe they are really yummy too as I now have a craving for them!!

My favorite recipe- passed down from my Auntie Berta- has dates, cherries and pecans. I’ve probably experimented with at least 20 different recipes over the years. Anybody receiving an unwanted fruitcake can send it to me!

My favorite holiday food is the fudge my grandma used to make. It’s the kind you boil on the stove, then pour onto a plate to cool. The plate is always a fancy, festive one, which of course makes the fudge taste even better. Then, we cut tiny pieces with a very sharp knife and savor the goodness. My grandma is not with us anymore, but she left us with a very sweet memory.

  268. 268
    Beth T. says:

Oh, this is an easy one. Every year, my mom used to make “Christmas Salad”, a recipe from the Mike Roy cookbook involving oranges, canned cherries and pineapple chunks in a whipped cream sauce with marshmallows and a tad of lemon juice. Sounds awful, when I write it out, but it was a real treat, especially since we had it only once a year. After I became a vegetarian, and stopped eating marshmallows, my mom would make a portion of it just for me, sans marshmallows. She was very thoughtful about things like that.

Now I make the Christmas Salad, often in a smaller batch since I’m the only one who eats it. Christmastime and Christmas Salad, a perfect pairing.

  269. 269

My favorite Holiday food is my Kumquat and Cranberry sauce. It has become my “reflection” food. Before all the hubbub in the kitchen starts, I get up at 5am on holiday mornings and start the process of preparing the kumquats. My grandfather used to grow kumquats, and they would be so ripe you could pick them and immediate pop them in your mouth like candy. The ones in stores in Nov and Dec here on the north east coast, however are a bit different and require several boil baths to remove the bitterness. It has moved from being labor-intensive to my favorite part of the day and favorite food to prepare because it gives me a chance to pray, reflect, and just plain miss parents and grandparents who are no longer with us. The smell of citrus is so comforting, and once I have the sauce prepared, I enter the holiday cooking with a renewed faith, heart, and energy for a busy but loving day :)

My favorite holiday food is Swedish Kringle. Growing up it was the special treat we got on Christmas morning to hold us off for a later meal (it’s butter, flour, egg, and some sugar – what’s not to love?). I grew up knowing it was my grandma’s recipe, that my mom continued to make each year (even though she wasn’t fond of the process to make it) for my dad and then because we kids loved it. When I was old enough I took over making it and changed our tradition to be on Thanksgiving and Christmas morning. …this year I will have to learn to make it gluten free. I am loving learning more about these great creative women!

Pumpkin pie! I remember helping my grandmother make it every year as a child for both Thanksgiving and Christmas get togethers. Since she had a collection of pans, sometimes we’d end up with various pies ranging from 6″–10″. I think I ate a whole 6″ one on my own when I was about 7 years old! Totally worth the stomach ache. She made the best pies.

Christmas pudding! I’ve always loved it and start having it for breakfast well before Christmas hits. When I was a kid I would make extra pocket money “picking over” all of the dried fruit (making sure there are no crunchy stalks or seeds in there) for the puddings and cakes my mam baked. Yum.

What wonderful prizes… I know the name of this blog is “Where Women Create” so I hope I am not stepping on any toes by leaving a comment, but I had to share my favorite Holiday food…

My Favorite Holiday Food is Polska Kielbasa with Sour Kraut. I know, you’re thinking, “That stupid MAN, Polska Kielbasa and Sour Kraut is NOT a Holiday food!” But for me, it is.

You see, I don’t care for Turkey, Gravy, Cranberries, etc. and I can’t stand stuffing (who thought wet bread was a good idea!?) My Grandmother knew that I didn’t like those foods so every year at Thanksgiving and Christmas she would prepare the Grand Feast for the family and plates and plates of food would be brought out, and then she would bring a small corning ware dish with her Sour Kraut and Polska Kielbasa just for me. It is my favorite dish bar none, and Grandma knew that.

On Holidays she insisted that everyone be able to enjoy their meal, and against the protestations of my father who told her every year that I should just eat what everyone else was eating, she kept making me a special dish of my favorite food. Every other day of the year, I would eat whatever she put on the table without discussion (not that there was much she made that I didn’t like, mind you) but on Holidays, she was willing to go to a little extra effort to ensure that we were all happy. Even little ol’ me…

Thanks for the opportunity to win and share,

    Paul

Once you get something started they just expect it to be year after year. Thank for the giveaway and Happy Hpliday to You and Yours.

    Deb says:

My favorite holiday food is a cheese ball. I know, weird, right? Well, it’s kind of a joke with our family now. Years ago, when we hosted our first Xmas for my family, my husband requested “cheese balls”. Now, being young and never having had a cheese ball at a party before, the only thing I could think that he meant were Planters cheez balls…as in little crunchy puffed things with artificial orange “cheese” on them. So, that’s what I bought. When I put out the appetizers he’s asked where the cheese ball was…I’m like “um, they’re right here”. When I finally realized that there was such a thing as a cheese ball, as in a ball of cheese used to spread on crackers, we made it a must have at every holiday. Cracks us up every time! Thanks for the chance!

    Wanda Contreras says:

My favorite food has to be a Puertorican Christmas dinner. I love the spread that they make. Roasted pork, rice with pigeon peas, bananas, pasteles( similar to tamales but better) and the desserts are to die for. But if I have to choose one thing, has to be the COQUITO, which is a drink similar to eggnog but made with cream of coconut and RUM.
FELIZ NAVIDAD! (I’m from Puerto Rico but moved to the USA 16 years ago and I REALLY miss my little island)
    best regards,

Christmas cookies, because what’s more delicious than cookies?

  479. 479
    Lise says:

For me, Christmas is about tradition, and food. Certain things I have to do at Christmas one one of them is make cookies. A particular bunch of cookies, like a potpourri of family traditional recipes along with amazing recipes that I have picked up through the years. But the favorite cookie of all, is this odd little cookie. Its a mint meringue and its NOT Christmas without it. It requires a Chocolate Mint Chip (it cannot be white chocolate colored green and flavored like mint) It also cannot have mint flavoring in the mirange and a regular chip in the cookie – I’ve tried both and they are epic fails.

Now, this historically was not a problem the first decade of my marriage, but in the past decade finding these chips has been my task (and it wasn’t easy – stores stopped stocking it – and floated to the white chocolate style). Thank goodness amazon came around. I looked like an insane woman purchasing twenty bags of mint chocolate chips (when I was lucky enough to find them) and saving them for up to two years, doling them out.

So I ordered my stash in November from Amazong – no longer nestle – they are gourmet (I tasted them – they are delicious). So I can make my Mint Meringues, and it can be Christmas!

And I a happy that he will make it again for us! You can only have it once a year because it takes you that long to recover from its richness.

    Enjoy the day!

My favorite holiday food a tie between mincemeat pie, and powdered sugar nut balls. I like the nut balls because they are so versatile and can be made so many different ways, depending on the cook and what’s on hand at the moment. One year I had no vanilla, so I used rosewater for the nut balls– delicious! Another year, I made them for a friend who is allergic to nuts, and I substituted minced raisins and oatmeal for the nuts, and they turned completely different, and just as good in a new way. Mincemeat is just one of those pies that I always will associate with my Grandmother, and the care she took to make them those lucky years she managed to do it. Thanks for a lovely chance for a giveaway. I’m sorry I missed much of the 12 days…
