Tracy Porter Archives - Where Women Create

Hi There!

I’m Tracy Porter… thank you Where Women Create for having me over for a visit …and thank you all for staying and sharing in my story!

I have been making things all my life, and I am grateful everyday that I get to use my hands and my heart as one. I do all I can – not to put a box around my creativity, If I am making things, or somehow getting my hands dirty…. I feel balanced and at peace. This is really how my husband John and I began our company nearly 20 years ago, that has now become www.tracyporter.com . I choose living abroad for a few years post high school, over college….. and being broke, only pushed my creativity further. When I returned from a few years in France, I met my darling husband John, and we were determined to become entrepreneurs. We created things that we loved….& painted all sorts of bowls, candleholders, picture frames etc. We loaded up a borrowed van and set off for New York to show the world what we were made of. From that day on we knew we had a business …or at least a start to one!

We made all of our wares in an old chicken coop on a small farm in Wisconsin. We slowly hired some of the most amazing artists I had ever met….and, I am proud to say a few of them still work with us to this day! We write books, design dinnerware, rugs, lighting, clothing, shoes….. just about anything we can dream up & want to explore. Our thirst for creativity is a deep treasure trove of goodness!

What we do and the way we live are very entwined….our lifestyle has always driven our company decisions . We have 4 rascally little boys… they keep us humbled and ever grateful for the wonderful perspective, balance and joy they bring to our everyday. We embrace life with all of her lovely imperfections….and this drives one of my own personal mantras…..Be true to yourself. If you are true to yourself you can make it through most anything with your head on….( I can tell you first hand!) and you can continue to explore who you are and who you want to be as you evolve . I also believe that if you surround yourself with beauty everyday it will nurture your creative self….and allow you to see that inspiration is everywhere.

A year ago John and I had a dream to explore another part of our beautiful country so we moved our family from Wisconsin to California. It has been quite an adventure for all of us…a great family bonding experience and a leap of faith. We now run our creative company from the Midwest and the West Coast! Our goal is to be planting fields of lavender, lemon & olive trees in the very near future! Ever dreaming with our eyes open….just like the time we drove to New York with a van full of our creations nearly 20 years ago!
