The First Day of Holiday Traditions ..

Today we are featuring the

HOLIDAY traditions

and

GREAT giveaways

of

~WHERE WOMEN CREATE~

Jo shares …

IMG_2939

"Every year for Christmas I make Olivia and Jackson, my twin grandchildren, an advent calendar.

Each calendar is created from 24 different single socks – little girl's socks for Olivia and little boy socks for Jackson.
The socks each have the date in fabric numbers ironed on the front and the individual stockings are hung from a long ribbon tied to the foot of their bed … one week at a time.

Each morning they wake up and then head straight to their stockings to find the tiny gift that is hidden inside the stocking of the day.
I know that I love finding the tiny treasures and filling all of those little stockings as much as they do "opening" them every morning during December".

Paige Shares …

Paige Hill 9906 copy

"One of my favorite holiday traditions sits atop a pine pole tree in my front room. A tree that is filled with little paper mache houses and other vintage ornaments. She is a Noma Christmas Angel circa 1940. She belonged to my beloved Grandma Wayment, and was a treasured part of Christmas while growing up. It just wasn't Christmas until the angel was lovingly placed on top of the tree. When her silver and white paper dress started to wear, Grandma sewed a new one of pink felt, complete with little pink pearls. Oh there were a couple of years when a star tried to take her place, but she always seemed to find her way back to the top of our family tree. It was there she stayed for 40 plus years until my Grandmother passed away. What a sad Holiday that was. It just wasn't the same without her, and it still isn't 24 years later. What I do have to bring back those wonderful memories  is my Angel who, every Christmas, will always be on the top of my pine pole tree. When Christmas is over, I bring her back up to my office. She has a prominent position on top of my bookcase so I can keep the holiday spirt with me always and remember the treasured memories of years past".

Fabulous Friday with Sara Duckett

ShabbyBlogsCollageBlogFrame copy

Headshot
Hi ladies! I'm Sara Duckett, owner of Sadie Olive, and I am so honored to be here. I began Sadie Olive in 2007 while still working in the mortgage industry as an underwriter. Owning my own business had always been a dream of mine, and it wasn't until I was inspired by a magazine like "Where Women Create" that I finally made an attempt to put that dream into motion. I instantly popped up from the sofa, threw down the magazine, and ran straight to my computer to start my first online business. It was a bit slow going in the beginning, but blogging and networking with shop owners really helped me along. When I was laid off from my mortgage job in August that year, I searched for new full time work with no luck, and then an email came through to me that changed my path completely. It was a friend asking to hire me to design her blog. My wheels starting spinning and I saw a new way to keep Sadie Olive open. I immediately added web and blog design services to the shop, and thankfully managed to stay afloat.

Banner

Sadie Olive has now grown into three branches. Our online retail boutique, where we sell new and "vintage inspired" home decor and accessories. Our design site, where we offer blog, web and graphic design services. And our vintage shop on Etsy, where we sell only vintage finds. I also dabble a bit in photography, but sadly I'm finding less and less time for it these days.

Here's a peek at things you'll find in our online boutique:

Maincollage

My schedule is a bit hectic at times, trying to find time for everything, but I manage to find time to treasure hunt twice a week, most weeks. Sourcing items for the shops has to be my favorite part of the job. Here's a sampling of some of our more recent vintage finds for our Etsy shop:

Etsyfinds

I try to hunt for items that I would want to adorn my home, and sometimes (before they sell) they do! I love to rearrange my collections as often as I can, and when I find something I just love, I make a commitment to sell something I already owned in order to keep my house looking uncluttered. Otherwise, you might find me on an upcoming episode of Hoarders. Ha! My family loves to tease me about my collecting since it's usually all over the place when they stop by. "It has to stay in the waiting area before being photographed for the shop", I tell them. :o)

Being self employed feels like living in a dream. I love that I get to do what I do, and I adore when people are as excited about their purchase as I was about finding it. There is a sense of satisfaction I still get with every order I receive. It's been a dream come true for me.

And now on to the good stuff!

This week we are giving away to one lucky "Where Women Create" reader, a beautiful French country tablecloth by Comptoir de Famille. Valued at $60, this generously oversized square tablecloth is 70" x 70" in red, cream and blue. (We manage to use one on our rectangle table, but it's a tad short on the long sides.) 100% cotton, and machine washable. Simply leave a comment on this post to enter.

Giveaway
Good luck to all of you! Oh, and since it's Black Friday, I have to tell you that we are having a 15% off sale in our shops. Simply use code "BLACKFRIDAY" at checkout.

It was lovely being able to share a moment of your day with you. Please use any of these links to visit us again soon!

Fabulous Friday with Kathy Wilkins and Melody Ross …

ShabbyBlogsCollageBlogFrame copy

Kathy-Melody-colorful-copy

We are sisters Kathy Wilkins and Melody Ross and we are the founders of Brave Girls Club and Brave Girl Camp. We are 4th generation Idaho girls and we come from a long line of strong and creative women who are our heroes. Brave Girls Club is an online and real-live community of women where any woman is welcome and where we combine art + life to help each other create the phenomenal life that our hearts are screaming for. We believe art heals…whether it is painting or cooking or sewing or gardening or creating music.

Picasso-quote

We define bravery as “doing difficult things as joyfully as possible”. We believe in fun, beauty and truth. We believe that women can overcome just about anything and we think a joyful life is worth fighting for. We believe you can make your surroundings beautiful wherever you are. We have a total blast every single day. We are absolutely living our dream after traveling a long and eventful road to get here. We have both lived through a lot of difficulty in our lives and through it learned tremendous skills to live a fabulous life in spite of those difficulties. We want to help other women to live their creative dreams and we have decided to make a career out of it. We LOVE what we do.

DINNER1

In addition to our mountain retreats, we are getting ready to launch our first online workshop, which will be 6 weeks long. YOU have a chance to join us and the hundreds of women who have registered. It will be amazing, we promise! Details can be found at the end of this post. There’s even a video at the end of this post that you can watch about it with testimonials from women from all over the place who have experienced this curriculum.

Ad-soul-restoration1

We come from a huge family of 9 siblings and 2 incredible parents (many of them help us out on this little adventure, our mom comes to every single camp!). You might know Melody from her former “life” as the founder and designer of what was one of the top designer paper companies in the papercrafting industry for over 10 years, Chatterbox, Inc. Melody is the artist and visionary behind Brave Girls Club and also the workshop facilitator and writer of all of the curriculum. Melody also writes the “Daily Truths” that go out to thousands and thousands of women from all over the world every day from BGC. (you can sign up for these daily messages at the end of this post) Kathy is the brains and analytics behind what is quickly becoming a big worldwide operation. She has a brilliant mind for business and marketing and huge heart to make sure it all happens inline with the goals of BGC. Kathy also cooks the most delicious and beautiful food you have ever eaten and is a professional musician. The handcrafted food of Brave Girl Camp has become legendary, as has the live music. Both of us have chosen to enthusiastically bring all of our talents to the table to do our best to offer one of the most unique, meaningful and life-changing retreats that has ever existed. We happily put our whole heart and souls into everything that BGC touches.

Doing-our-thing

Within a few months after the first camp was held and was met with fabulous reviews, every camp for the next few years sold out. This brings us many emotions. We are thrilled beyond words! Yet we are sad that we can’t offer more retreats each year, as our waiting list is longer than our guest list. We are working on this! We are actively seeking just the right property to make a home for Brave Girl Camp so that we can have day classes all month long and at LEAST one big retreat every month.

Currently, we host 5 retreats per year that sell out a year in advance. Our goal is to own our own retreat center where we will live and work…combining art, cooking, equine therapy and music therapy, along with our own gardens to work and cook from. We are working extremely hard to make this happen and it becomes more real every day!

We are now having a blast building our online community as fast as we can, as we have members joining from all over the world. We want to personally invite you to join us on our blog, join us in our online workshops and sign up to receive our daily truths…and as soon as it is possible, come visit us in Idaho at one of our retreats!

We are SURE you will find something there that makes your day a little brighter and inspires you to go out make the most of this precious life you are living….our goal is to make sure that we all know that it is never too late, that we all have a HUGE and unique contribution to make, that ALL of us are creative and can create the life we dream of…and that we can overcome ANY obstacle that comes up in life. ~FABULOUS FRIDAY~

Fabulous Friday with Jodi Sanford of Fancy Pants Designs …

ShabbyBlogsCollageBlogFrame copy

 Hello Creative Ladies!

JodiHeadShotColorweb 2

I'm Jodi Sanford, founder and owner, of Fancy Pants Designs!  We are a paper crafting supply manufacturer, but offer a wide range of products for various crafting hobbies!  I am excited to be here and share just a couple of the creative things that I enjoy doing as a scrapbooker and paper crafter…and crafter in general!

Just a little bit about me :): I am married to the most wonderful and supportive husband (and business partner) Jared.  We have four beautiful children that are our pride and joy each and every day!  My favorite 'job' is being a mommy to each of them!  And, because of that, I love preserving the memories we make together!  I've LOVED everything about crafting since I was a young girl..it's one of those generational things passed down the line–I just found my specific niche in paper crafting!  I love that I can make pages for my kids to look through, home decor items to hang on their wall, mini albums for the sofa tables for visiting guests to peak into our lives, and little notes and custom books for family and friends to make each day a bit more personal!  So, I guess you could say I've been a scrapbooker (or collector of paper and stickers) since I can remember, but I really turned my focus to preserving memories when I was married and our little family was established over 12 years ago!

Screen shot 2010-11-11 at 10.37.47 PM

A little bit more about Fancy Pants Designs– it started as a little home business to make those extra dollars that all stay at home moms need to keep up with their hobby!  It took some time, and loads of hard work, but, now, after 5 years in business, we have a fabulous company that we are proud of each day.  We work hard to bring innovative products into an already innovative industry!  I LOVE to see what people do with our products because as an idea pops into my mind, I think of what I would do with it…yet, what others do with it is that much more amazing!  We produce a wide variety of products that start with paper, but range out into metal frames for crafting/jewelry, frames for home decor, specialty trims, buttons, brads and more!!  You can see a little mix of these items below!

I've included just a few favorite projects that I've made over time using Fancy Pants Designs products.  I hope you will find some inspiration in them…something that can transfer over to your own passion!  You can also find daily inspiration in our idea gallery and see our product offerings at fancypantsdesigns.com and on our blog (with a team of 25 designers participating) at missfancypants.typepad.com
Screen shot 2010-11-11 at 10.14.59 PM

The projects show from top to bottom, left to right are:

Marli's Room: Frames and Wall Hangers from Fancy Pants Designs along with the fun product used to design the layouts!
Holden's Onesie:  Grandma (my mom :)) made this adorable onesie for our youngest little guy, using Fancy Pants Designs Boy Felt Shapes!
Family Album: This album was made from a one of our journal books, from the My Family collection!  It's filled with little notes and photos of each member of our family!
4 Happy Kids:  A fun little layout I designed using one of our newer lines– It's Your Day!
Birthday Card: A quick little card using our Girl Felt Shapes and pink book label!
Sis Layout: A layout sharing the love of sisters :).  I used ric rack as the frame and lots of fun stamps and colored pencils for the embellishing details!
Angel Layout: I loved this photo of my little girl and wanted to really highlight the colors–and i was sure to add a little chipboard wing to her back to finish of the 'angel' theme!

Thanks for letting me share a bit of my passion with you….and remember to keep up those 'fancy' creations!
Jodisiggyweb
I'd like to give away 3 prizes from our latest collections…there will be a mix of fun products and each will be valued at over $35. Just leave a comment to this post and you're entered!

Thank you so much Jodi …

Fabulous Friday with Kim Stoegbauer

ShabbyBlogsCollageBlogFrame copy

I am thrilled to be featured here today on Where Women Create!

Kim Stoegbauer The TomKat Studio

I was first introduced to the lovely publication while visiting New York City for BlogHer a couple of months ago! I instantly was mesmerized by all of the wonderful spaces featured that women create in. I was so excited when I was contacted by Paige for a feature post! My name is Kim Stoegbauer and I am the owner of The TomKat Studio.

Screen shot 2010-11-05 at 11.35.31 AM

I also go by creative director, editor, designer, stylist…you name it! About two years ago, I left my career in real estate to stay home with my two little ones, Tommy & Kate (TomKat). It was a difficult transition when I was used to working my whole life. I have always had the entrepreneur spirit and love being busy. I started my blog, The TomKat Studio just as a creative outlet for sharing my own crafty projects, decorating and parties.

Il_570xN.158809750

The blog quickly gained quite a following and readers were asking to purchase things that I was making. I opened an Etsy shop in March 2009, and since then my business has grown tremendously and just gets busier and busier! I couldn’t be happier doing what I love….Creating! I never imagined I could or would create a successful business out of my creative passion! I love inspiring others and working to promote other mom-owned small businesses! My focus on the blog turned to parties. After my daughter’s lollipop party was featured on several fabulous party sites, the demand for the designs used for the party was overwhelming.

TKS Lollipop Collection copyright Laura Winslow Photography (27)

I started designing, printing, assembling and shipping out full party packages including invitations, cupcake toppers, tags, banners and more.

Il_570xN.189241472

I soon could not keep up with the demand for my products. In the summer of 2009, I decided to create my designs as printable digital files. It was a win-win for both my schedule, and my crafty mom followers who can do much of the work themselves. My printable party packages have created a very popular trend and sales continue to rise each month.

Alice www.laurawinslowphotography.com (18)

I have now hired two work-at-home moms to help me handle all of the inquiries and orders we receive. There is no way I could handle the volume without them. I have been very lucky with amazing press opportunities in the last year.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

~A Crafty Holiday~

A-Crafty-Holiday-button-1

When our friend Angela Flicker asked us to participate in

A Crafty Holiday 2010

We jumped at the chance. Angela has a great idea. She wants to encourage us to buy handmade and crafty this holiday season. With this in mind, she started "A Crafty Holiday" blog hop. Read her mission here. We at Where Women Create couldn't think of a better way to support handmade than to add our blog to this great cause!

So here is our answer to this question posed by Angela …

"Why are you buying handmade items this holiday season"?

Our motto here at Where Women Create is

From A Woman's Soul.
Through A Woman's Eyes.
By A Woman's Hands.

We fully and completely stand behind this philosophy. I can tell you that it is an amazing feeling purchasing something handmade. You are directly supporting a labor of love! As I walked through the Handmade Market at The Creative Connection I was in awe of the beautiful works of art that these talented women created. I purchased many Christmas gifts, and even some things for myself. I came home with some one-of-a kind treasures that I will always hold dear to my heart.

Please keep this in mind this holiday season.

We need to support each other and the handmade movement!

Our next assignment for this project was to create a list of handmade items on our holiday shopping list.

WHEW!

What a big job that would be!

We could never choose just a few artists, so we invite you to check our blog roll, our Creative Friends links and our Fabulous Friday artists. We have assembled quite a list of FABULOUS artist with beautiful items for your holiday shopping needs. Not only that, we are adding a link at the bottom of this page where you can share your shop or blog with all of us. All we ask in return is that you please add a Where Women Create button to your site or add us to your blog roll. Then, follow this schedule for a complete list of participating blogs in "A Crafty Holiday".

You won't want to miss a single day!
