Jo Packham to be Honored With Ogden City Mayor’s Award in the Arts

I am so excited to announce that our own Jo Packham is going to receive an award from Ogden City, Utah Mayor Mike Caldwell on October 11th, 2012.  Jo has long been a supporter of revitalizing Ogden and of course the arts.  She is being honored in the literary category; which of course makes perfect sense.  Jo wanted me to share a quick note of thanks:

“I am honored to receive Mayor Caldwell’s Awards in the Arts in the Literary category. I love working on any project that could be considered “the arts”  and I am proud to be recognized  among the other inspiring artisans that are also being honored.

I would like to thank the Mayor and those who were on the nominating committee.”

I invite you to congratulate Jo on her fabulous work and well deserved honor.  Congratulations Jo!

Fabulous Feature :

Fabulous Feature: Paint and Such

It seems like I just can’t stick to one when it comes to our Fabulous Feature series.  So many people have multiple things they truly love about their studios or work spaces.  It really is hard to narrow it down to just one.  Carol sent me over so many lovely photos I even had a hard time just choosing a couple to feature.  I can understand why she loves so many things in her studio.  I am excited for you to see just how fabulous her bulletin board of family photos and “hat lady” are.

“My bulletin board over my desk.”

“Mom’s hat lady.”

Fabulous Feature: Paint and Such

“I work in gouache which is an opaque water color. I mix the colors in these little plastic jars and just add water to them when I want to paint. They are very handy with the mixing info taped on the cover, I love the ease and simplicity that the plastic containers bring to my everyday work.”

“I have been licensing my work for over 25 + years and my website is www.caroleldridgedesigns.com. My new studio at home is painted the blue of the ocean, since I live in Marblehead only a few short blocks from the beach. The Captain and I own a boat and love the ocean. The town is built around a wonderful harbor which is the focal point of our activity especially in the summer months. My studio is filled with all sort of interesting collectibles, samples of my products, prototypes I have created, lots of my fabric, reference books, sketch books and a ton of photographs of my family. I have one entire wall that is a giant bulletin board where I hang my work in progress to watch it evolve. I have little treasures in groupings and vignettes all over the studio that is literally bursting with color and inspiration. “

Jo’s Favorite Things: Paint Brushes

Have you ever wondered what Jo Packham’s favorite things are?  Well your wait is over.  Each week we are going to feature a few of her favorite things.  It’s like taking a peek into the mind of a creative genius.  I’ve been inside the Where Women Create offices and it is as magical as you would expect.  I have always wondered where Jo gets her inspiration from and what she loves.  I am excited to see and share some of her favorite this with you.

Fabulous Feature: Sewing Table and Typewriter

This week’s Fabulous Feature is once again “features” because sometimes there are just too many amazing features in one space to choose only ONE.  And in the case of Jaime’s craft room there really is a lot to love.  Especially her decoupaged sewing table and beautiful teal typewriter

“My sewing table ♥ because it’s decoupaged with an old dress pattern that just gets me in the mood to stitch things together :) (and it has a built in measuring tape!)”

“My vintage teal typewriter & embroidery hoops ♥I found both at yard sales, filled the hoops with material from my vintage linen stash :)”

Fabulous Feature-Stamp Storage

This weeks Fabulous Feature brings a smile to my face.  I love it when storage can be beautiful and on display.  We didn’t acquire all of our treasures to have them hidden away, did we?  That is why I love how Mary Ann has taken a 3-tiered basket and turned it into the perfect place for stamp storage.

“I love using this 3-tiered basket for storage in my studio. Right now it’s home to rubber stamps and a sweet little mercury glass bird. It’s a perfect catch-all for keeping things in plain view instead of being tucked away and forgotten. Oh, and it looks pretty cute too!”

Alt Design Summit Blog

Jo has attended Alt Design Summit for the last 2 years.  It is a wonderful conference full of creative, design, and business minded women.  What’s not to love?

Did you know that Alt also has a blog?  For blogging inspiration and business advice check out the new Alt blog.  Recently I stumbled across an article on their blog about “12 Striking Tendencies of Creative People“.  I think the one item that really spoke to me is #1… Are Easily Bored.  I think most of you can relate to this.  This is why are minds are constantly working overtime.  Trying out new ideas.  And maybe even driving the ones around us a little crazy.

Be honest?  Does that describe you?

Fabulous Feature: Stack ‘em High

Does your studio, office, or workspace serve as a dual purpose?  Maybe a dining room, living room, garage, or even a guest bedroom?  If this is the case you know that extra storage is key.  That is why today’s Fabulous Feature really spoke to me.  Not only are Karen’s vintage suitcases beautiful but they serve as storage.  How genius is that?

Pieces Passed
www.piecespassed.blogspot.com

“My favorite thing in my studio would have to be my stack of suitcases because when you are calling your small spare bedroom (with the bed intact!) your ‘studio’ you really do need all of the storage space you can get!!  I’ve scoured flea markets, dusty attics, and yard sales for years culling these suitcases, carting them home on planes like an ancient world traveler, all for the thrill of filling them until they barely latch and stacking them high!  My favorite one would have to be the one near the top with the old train ticket still attached…I just can’t bear to cut it off!”

Fabulous Feature: Fan Necklace

Do you ever create something that you love so much it stays with you?  Something that brings a smile to your face every time you think of it?  Today’s Fabulous Feature is from Rex and Ruth.  They have made several of these gorgeous fan necklaces since this one but it has stayed as their favorite.  Just looking at it you can see why.

www.fun-creative-artglass.com

“This is one of the first ‘fan necklaces’ that my husband Rex and I created.  We fuse glass and each one is ‘one of a kind.’   This is my favorite because it was one of the very first ones.  I do the color arrangements and do the many steps of glass fusing.  My husband is the one who cuts the fan. We don’t have much time to do these creations anymore but they are very popular when we finish a new one.”

Fabulous Feature: Dress Form and Ribbon Organizer

Function, beauty, and inspiration.  Not everything in our workspace can meet those criteria.  But today’s Fabulous Feature from Patricia certainly has all 3 of those things covered.  It doesn’t always happen where everything meshes as well  as it does in this dress form and ribbon organizer.

“I have a wee little studio that sits under a huge Spruce tree surrounded by lovely English gardens.  When I say ‘wee,’ it’s 100 s.f. of bliss.  I have so many things that I love about my Studio, but two things stand out.  Sorry, I couldn’t narrow it down to just one.”  (It’s okay Patricia I can’t really blame you for loving both.  I certainly do.)

“First is Pearl.  She is my beautiful dress form.  Pearl is the perfect size 8, never says a bad word about anyone, and she looks amazing in anything she wears . . . especially when she is draped with my jewels.”

“Second best thing is my ribbon holder.  I love that I can look at this little cabinet and see everything that I need for wrapping my packages for my customers.  Each cubby is coordinated by color.  Can you tell what my favorite color is?  The cubby is actually a closet shoe rack that we attached with brackets right to the wall.  It’s perfect :)”

Fabulous Feature: It’s a Sign

What brings a smile to your face each day?  When you walk into your workspace what are you automatically drawn to?  It’s the little things that make our space our own. There are always one or two things that you just adore above all others; whether you have an enormous studio, tiny cubicle, or an entire workshop.  Lu has seen the sign (literally and figuratively) and share it with us today.

“I adore this sign because it reminds me of why I started in the jewelry industry. It is not just about the jewelry designs, it is about how they make you feel when you wear them! I want my customers to feel beautiful…everyday!”

“This sign mostly just justifies my clutter. I use it as an excuse not to clean up my beads because I believe it improves my creative energy!”

Fabulous Feature: Books, Ornaments, and Lights

Each week we feature favorite items from your studio.  And sometimes it is hard to choose just one.  That is the case when it comes to Cindy Ann.  She sent me so many lovely photos of items in her studio, I couldn’t just feature one.  So I chose three.  And you’ll see why when you look at these books, ornaments, and lights.

“I love my books. They are a great source of inspiration and taking a moment to thumb through them is always a great way of jumpstarting my creativity.”

I have my inspirational ornaments hung all around my studio as little reminders to what I’m doing this all for – to dream and live a beautiful life.”

“I needed to warm up the place a bit so I picked up some chinese lantern style lights and hung them in a group from the celling. “

Thank You!

As I mentioned Friday, it is always an honor for Jo, or Where Women Create, to be featured on websites, in stories, or even mentioned in passing in the grocery store.  Each instance is met with the greatest amount of appreciation.  From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!

Today we want to thank Steven Pressfield, from Steven Pressfield Online, for the lovely mention of Jo Packham’s book, Where Women Create:

“There must be a hundred or so workspaces illustrated–studios for weavers, potters, decoupage artists, sculptors, carvers. What struck me was the sacredness of all these spaces, each one created by a different artist following only her own instincts and the requirements of her craft.”

To read the rest of Steven’s mention visit the article at: http://www.stevenpressfield.com/2010/04/writing-wednesdays-33-having-a-practice-part-two/.

Feature, Feature

It is always a pleasure to be featured in or interviewed for an article.  Jo recently spoke with Jennifer Forker, from The Associated Press, about one of her true loves, studios.  And as you know from Where Women Create, Jo adores studios and the women behind them.  Here is just a little of what was shared in the article:

“You have to decide what you’re going to do there and what you love,” says Jo Packham, editor of Where Women Create, a quarterly magazine in which women write about their own creative spaces.

“I love containers. I love little bottles, and everything has to be very organized,” Packham says about her own Ogden, Utah, studio.

We invite you to read the entire article and support the other fabulous people featured in the article:  http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/artists-create-studios-personal-16955951

Fabulous Feature: Sticky Business

I love it when we feature items from the workspace you love, your own.  Your favorite item doesn’t always have to be decor or furniture.  Sometimes the item you love or use the most is actually a tool like an Elmer’s Glue Pen. It’s perfect for any of the sticky business you may be up to in your studio, office, or workspace.

A glue pen from elmer's

The Cherry On Top
http://lmtroch.blogspot.be/

“That Elmer’s Glue Pen is essential for me.  The tiny tip at one end allows you to glue the most minuscule objects without getting glue everywhere.  The other end is a flat opening for larger objects.  This item is more precious than gold because I can’t buy it where I live and have yet to find as good a replacement.  So, I beg my friends in the States to send me some and use is as sparing as possible. Hehehe…”

Fabulous Feature: Rolling Red Cart

Workspaces aren’t always offices, studios, or even shops.  Sometimes we spend our time creating on the go.  That is why this week’s fabulous feature is a lovely red rolling kitchen cart.  It’s pretty, functional, and on wheels.  What’s not to like?

Melissa Brac
www.melissa-eclecticbloggista.blogspot.com

“My rolling kitchen cart is functional, practical and attractive.  It has one top drawer with room for small items such as pens, embellishments, rulers, adhesives, scissors, ribbons, etc.  It also has two wood framed doors that hide a shelf and generous storage space to put away my larger tools along with my work-in-progress. Having wheels on the cart provides freedom of movement so I can roll  my project into the living room or screened-in porch whenever I want a change of view- or whenever the table has to be set for dinner!”

Who doesn’t love getting little inspirational notes?  What if you got them while at work from one of your fabulous co-workers?  That is what makes this week’s feature, a chalkboard shelf, so special.  It allows Ava to recieve inspiration throughout the week.

“We found an old drawer at a salvage yard in Bay View, painted the back with Chalkboard Paint and hung it up on the wall behind my desk. Our Art Director, Sam O’Leary, draws me inspirational messages when he sees I need them. I display these alongside favorite Instagram pictures and sentimental trinkets.
